How to Make a T-Shirt Quilt

Preserving memories involve more than just scrapbooks these days. T-shirt quilts are becoming a popular way to commemorate a childhood, concert-going days, or even a loved one who has passed.

Everyone has t-shirts they just cannot bear to toss in the trash. With t-shirt quilts, you can use that old football jersey, Van Halen t-shirt, and even sweet baby onesies to create a special, durable quilt that you can cherish for years to come. These quilt creations make wonderful gifts and keepsakes for children, adults, friends, or family members.

So you have the t-shirts, but you don’t know what to do in order to go from stack of old shirts to amazing quilt? Even a beginning quilt-maker can succeed at this project with a little guidance. The following will help you to learn how to make a t-shirt quilt. The first step is to make sure you can cut the same size square out of each t-shirt you want to use. Identify the best section of each shirt and decide how you can crop so each square is the same size and in a perfect square shape. The size of the square and number of t-shirts used determines how large your quilt will be. You can go as small as a lap quilt to as large as a covering for a king size bed! Use as few as four t-shirts or as many as 36.

Next you will need to focus on the interfacing—the material that provides the backing and structure for the quilt. Interfacing helps the quilt to keep its shape. You can choose between woven or non-woven type and between light through medium weight material. A fabric store can help you to find exactly what you need. You will want to cut the interfacing material slightly larger than the t-shirt blocks in order to make the seams as sturdy as they can be. Then you will fuse the interfacing to the t-shirt sections, following the instructions that come from the interfacing manufacturer.

You may choose to simply sew the t-shirts together or you may choose to use additional material for sashing and borders around each t-shirt square. The sashing and borders can provide a contrast and attractive way to divide the different t-shirt squares, but they are optional. Remember to wash the t-shirts, interfacing material, and sashing before sewing, so the colors do not bleed or spread.

The fun part is arranging the blocks and deciding the layout for your quilt. Find a large, clear space to lay down each square and play around with different layouts until you come up with the perfect look.

Finally, the sewing begins! Choose to sew either horizontally or vertically and, if you are adding sashing pieces, sew those in as you work. Sew the rows together and then add the border. The finishing touch is to layer the t-shirt quilt with backing and/or batting. Tape or pin the pieces together and either use a quilting machine or tie the layers together. Wrap it all up by binding, which holds the edges together and gives your quilt a polished look.

T-Shirt quilting is a fun, relatively easy way to use your beloved Ts. The finished product will be something in which you can take pride. But, beware—you may find friends and family asking you to take-on their t-shirt quilting projects once they see your unique masterpiece!

Growth of Offensive T-Shirts

If you find ‘Your Sister is Hot but Your Mom does that Thing with Her Tongue’ offensive, what’d you say to the one that defiantly announces ‘In the Mouth? In the Ass? In the Vagina? Between Your Tits? I Support a Woman’s Right to Choose’! These offerings on tshirthell.com are the pits and certainly focus on hurting the sensibilities of most. The bad news is there are always more ways to offend than this! Welcome to the shocking world of offensive custom t-shirts that continue to offend, outrage, provoke and delight us!

Offensive t-shirts

Let’s face it. The t-shirts flaunting brands and logos are ‘very much not the market anymore’. In other words, they’re no longer as fashionable. The billboard space that a t-shirt provides is simply too tempting to be wasted on them. So, the custom t-shirts have turned funny, trendy and cute. But, what’s slowly and steadily becoming the norm are hard hitting messages that aim to outrage and offend!

Seen this one? ‘Wong Brothers Laundry Service–Two Wongs Can Make It White’. This tee depicts two smiling caricatured faces with slanted eyes and conical hats. Or another one, portraying a man pulling a rickshaw that says ‘Rick Shaw’s Hoagies and Grinders–Order by the foot. Good meat. Quick feet.’ Cute isn’t it? But, it didn’t sound that to hundreds of Asians whose cries of racism and accusations of misguided attempts at humor drove Abercrombie & Fitch to recall these twenty-five bucks t-shirts.

And what’d you say to the custom t-shirts for women that had these profound words printed right across the chest–’Who Needs Brains When You Have These?’ or ‘I Taught Your Boyfriend That Thing You Like’?

It’s not only racism or sexism that’s the most favored theme of offensive t-shirts; it can be anything under the sun. When a San Diego area high school student wore a t-shirt that proclaimed ‘Be Ashamed, Our School Embraced What God has Condemned’ on the front and ‘Homosexuality is Shameful’ on the back, it went to the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The Court, in a 2-1 decision, ruled that the t-shirt was ‘injurious to gay and lesbian students and interfered with their right to learn’. It ‘collides with the rights of other students in the most fundamental way’

Your very own offensive t-shirts

Before you think up a real stinker of a slogan for your t-shirt, better know the legal angle. Since, t-shirts are the ones that are used to perpetuate and feed hate crimes through intentionally insulting campaigns; they do come under the preview of the law. The law forbids wearing or possessing items depicting or implying racial hatred or prejudice or other offensive and demeaning matter. However, this is always weighed against the provisions of free speech.

So, if you’re contemplating an offensive t-shirt you’re certainly treading a fine line. But, if you’re certain your slogan is not as blatant as ‘Fuck Duke’ worn by University of Maryland students for a basketball match up against Duke, you can go right ahead. There are a variety of colors, materials and t-shirt designs to choose from. You can create your very own offensive t-shirt. Custom t-shirts already have a captive audience; all you need to do is to display your dark side in an ‘appropriately offensive manner’!

Tips for Creating Cool Customized T-Shirts

Customizing your own t-shirts online is simple, if you know where to start and have tips from the pros.

Start with the shirt. Choose a name brand or generic t-shirt. Pick a style like mens, womens, v-neck, roundneck, babydoll, and long or short sleeved. Each style may have a different cost.

Next comes the design. Online libraries have thousands of images to choose from. You can also create your own with a computer graphic program or use a photo and then upload it. Experts say proper resolution is critical for clean results. The standard resolution for printed artwork is 300 dpi (dots per inch).

Typically, if you upload your own image, a production team member will check out the design and make suggestions to be sure it will print well.

When it comes to clothing, size definitely matters. Experts have some advice. When buying for men, always look for adult sizes. Always buy more larger sizes than smaller sizes. Often there are styles called “beefy” and they are cut larger. Men’s cut t-shirts are usually more square.

If you’re buying for women, look for women-specific styles like baby doll. The women’s styles are often cut so they come in a bit at the waist and flare at the bottom. If the women in your group prefer men’s cuts and styles, buy a men’s size that is one size smaller than what they would wear in a women’s size. For example, if she wears a women’s medium, get a men’s small.

If you are in charge of purchasing shirts for a big group or for fundraising, be sure to buy more larger sizes than smaller sizes. Most people prefer wearing bigger t-shirts.

If you have any suggestions for creating customized shirts please let us know and we will share them with our readers.

Lionel Richie

One Celebrity Says Hello on His T-Shirt

Lionel RichieIf you have something to say, a t-shirt is a great way to do it. Lionel Richie is a man of words but on his t-shirt he kept it short. Richie was spotted with his new granddaughter wearing a t-shirt with the word “Hello”. Personally I don’t know why a guy who has had five number one singles, eleven completed albums, and received a Grammy would wear a “Hello” shirt but sometimes its best to let our t-shirts do the talking. The Hello is in a large font in white on an charcoal colored long sleeved t-shirt. Smiley

Celebrities Wear Positive Message T-Shirts – Smiley Face T-Shirts and their History

Smiley

You couldn’t miss the large yellow smiley face design on Brazilian supermodel Alessandro Ambrosio’s t-shirt. The smiley was first used in 1963 by Harvey Bell for an insurance firm. However because Ball did not try to promote or trademark the yellow smiley face it fell into public domain. The smiley face became popular in the early 1970s when the Spain brothers used it on novelty items with phrases like “Have a Happy Day”. The image was finally trademarked in 1971 by Frankin Loufrani and is used in over 100 countries and 25 classes of goods and products. In the 1980s the smiley became a part of acid house dance music culture when it was engraved on ecstasy tablets. Wal-Mart also tried to trademark the smiley face in the United States but encountered a lot of legal conflicts and soon began to phase out the smiley faces and they officially lost the case in March 2008. There are currently more than 1,200 smiley emoticons registered with the Washington Library of Congress. Image from Pacific Coast News and history of the smiley from Wikipedia.

Recycle

Celebrities Promote Recyling on T-Shirts

Recycle

To promote their new movie “What happens in Vegas..”, Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher made an appearance on MTV’s TRL. Kutcher was wearing a bright green t-shirt with the word Recycle repeated once in solid white and in an outline over the rest of the shirt. In a smaller font is the phrase “Have a Nice Day”. The design is a take off of the old bags that had the phrase “Thank you” repeated all over the bag.

It is great to see celebrities using their time on-air to spread the word about important lifestyle choices such as recycling. Of course one celeb wearing a recycling shirt isn’t going to change the world but every bit counts.

Pink T-Shirts and Breast Cancer Walks Raise Money and Awareness

Avon

Breast Cancer walks have been an incredible way for organizations such as the Avon Foundation and Susan G. Komen to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research and education. Actress Reese Witherspoon was named the Honorary Chairman of the Avon Foundation and gave a speech at the walk’s closing ceremonies. As with most of the walkers Witherspoon was wearing the bright pink Avon Walk for Breast cancer T-Shirt.

The Avon Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity founded in 1955 with a mission to improve the lives of women and their families. Today that mission is brought to life through two key initiatives: the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade, which advances access to care and finding a cure, with a focus on the medically underserved; and the Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program which works to end the cycle of domestic violence, with a special focus on children.

Retro

Retro 1980s T-Shirts Worn By Celebrities

Retro

A commercial for Saturday Night Live was aired this week showing Shia LaBeouf and Andy Samberg promoting the next episode of SNL. Andy and Shia are “exploring the roof garden” wearing two retro styled t-shirts. Andy’s is wearing a forest green t-shirt with a bear and the phrase “John Muir Grizzlies”. From what I can tell John Muir School is an elementary school in Berkeley California whose mascot is the Grizzlies. Shia’s is wearing a maroon t-shirt with the “South Portland Spring Point Festival” and 1986. Not sure why they are wearing such random shirts but I guess we will have to wait until Saturday night to find out. Visit NBC to watch the commercial.

John Mayer

Celebrities Modify T-Shirts on the Fly

John MayerWe all love free t-shirts but there are some free t-shirts that you just may not want to accept. A fan gave singer John Mayer a t-shirt with the phrase Mr. Douchebag and a funny round blue in bright colors below. Despite the weird t-shirt gift, Mayer put on the shirt and used his autograph pen to cross out the word “douchebag” and wrote “badass” right above to make it say “Mr. Badass”.

Personally I don’t think crossing out “Douchebag” and writing “badass” really makes you a badass but at least he is willing to have fun. The shirt is a play on the Little Miss series by Junk Food Clothing.

If you are brave enough you can deface your own Mr. Douchebag shirt from David & Goliath

Does My T-Shirt Match? A Question for Every T-Shirt Wearer

Matching colors when you are getting dressed is something that most of us focus on and others simply do not. However, in order to look your best, it is important to wear colors that match and complement one another. Let’s face it, bright orange and bright purple simply do not make a combination that is pleasing to the eye.

From every age you will hear the question, does my T-shirt match? It comes from young children practically every time they get dressed. From adults it is less common, but will get asked when the wearer is not sure. Men are more often the ones who ask their wives for advice on matching colors.

Color is incredibly important to the look we are trying to present. Poor use of color will not put forth the impression that we have made an effort or that our appearance is important. Therefore to make the best impression possible on others, it is important to match, even when you are wearing a T-shirt. A good use of color gives an aura of sophistication, good taste, and style to the person wearing a well-matched outfit.

There are certain things that will match practically any color T-shirt. They are jeans; black pants, shorts or a skirt; and to a lesser degree khakis. Blue jeans and black bottoms match well with any color tee and make for easy dressing and coordination. When you are wearing khakis, you have almost the same ease. White T-shirts and khaki T-shirts definitely do not match with khaki pants or shorts, unless you want to look like a nurse or chef. The combination of two almost white colors gives the impression that you are wearing a uniform. With the exception of those colors, any goes with khaki.

Apart from those three easy-to-match colors, matching two or more colors together is often a dicey proposition depending on your experience and taste. To make it more difficult, what is considered matching also changes with what is in style. Green and pink was not considered a match until recently, nor was brown and pink. With this said, different hues and tones also contribute to the match factor. Not all tones of green match with all tones of pink.

Some rules of thumbs when matching are:

  • Avoid seasonal color matches. For example, red and green do not match, nor do pale yellow and pale pink. Black and orange tend to look best together at Halloween.
  • Do not try to put colors that are similar to each other together thinking that they will automatically match. Often two tones of any one color together look like a sloppy attempt to make a match. If you have more than three tones of the same color, it is a fashion disaster.
  • Try to find balance in working with bright colors. If you are wearing something bright on top, wear a more muted or neutral color on bottom and vice versa.

One thing is sure, with these tips in mind T-shirts are easy to match. Having a good selection of different T-shirts will make dressing for success, an easy thing to do.

Get different colored custom-made T-shirts today and jazz up your wardrobe in an easy to match way.

Organic Cotton

1,000 New Farms Start Growing Organic Cotton to Meet T-Shirt Demand

Organic Cotton

Wal-Mart purchased 12 million pounds of transitional cotton from 1,000 farmers at the premium organic price to encourage farmers to grow organically and therefore boost the supply. Cotton is transitional when farmers have stopped using traditional techniques and have started organic agricultural methods but have not waited the three years to get formally certified as organic cotton.

With 4,100 stores Wal-Mart needed to encourage growth of the market to supply their stores. The transitional cotton shirts will be marketed under their Faded Glory brand. Buying in such a large bulk allows Wal-Mart to sell the transitional cotton t-shirts between $3.50 and $6.00 which is far less than other t-shirt companies are able to sell. Wal-mart is also selling Coca-Cola t-shirts made from recycled plastic bottles. Via PSFK & Reuters
