Black Tights

One of her most signature pieces were her always-present black tights. The tights were such a part of her look that it became what she was best known for. Luckily, her signature black tights are easy to find. She wore opaque black tights much of the time, but she also wore sheer black tights. She wore them so often that she created a fad for them in the 60’s and was sometimes called “The Girl in the Black Tights.” Pair anything at all with black tights and you’re channeling her look.

Black and White

Much of her look centered on combinations of black and white. The look was about blocks of color as well as stripes, and usually everything was black, white or both. Emo

Emo is more than a music style it is also a fashion style for a those with lot of emotions that need expressing. Emo is short for emotional, and people who dress this way want people to know how deep their emotions run. For this reason, dressing emo generally means creating a somber look that communicates that depth.

Colors

The number one color for dressing emo is black. Other dark colors, such as navy blue, dark gray and dark jewel tones will also create the needed somber look. No matter what articles of clothing you choose and what accessories you pair them with, always make sure to keep the colors dark. Sometimes, black and white will do if the predominant color is black. A black shirt with thin white stripes can look very emo.

Pants

Emo guys and girls tend to wear dark pants in a few different styles. The jeans are usually dark blue, black or a very deep gray. The pants are generally straight leg style rather than flaired or tapered. Sometimes these jeans are called “skinny jeans“. Some emo dressers wear dark brown or black corduroy pants.

Tops

The tops worn by emo dressers are often either track jackets or vintage-style t-shirts. Many people who dress emo actually do find vintage t-shirts in thrift stores or in vintage clothing stores, but vintage-style shirts that are pre-faded are now readily available online and in many clothing stores. The vintage t-shirt may be worn under a vintage track suit or under an unbuttoned button-up shirt in a dark color. Whatever type of top you choose, make sure it fits tightly. A loose fitting t-shirt does not fit into the emo style.

New t-shirts that are not vintage style can also fit into the emo look. The t-shirts should have some type of printing on them, from nonsensical words to popular sayings to pictures of animals. Some emo dressers like checkered shirts or striped shirts, but those are usually are worn over a t-shirt with printing on it.

Belts

In keeping with the dark color scheme, many emo dressers wear a belt with metal studs on it. Emo girls sometimes wear a white belt for a contrasting color, though emo guys usually wear a black one.

Socks and Shoes

Argyle socks are favored by emo dressers, and they can be in any color at all. Even white socks with light-colored patterns on them are ok in the emo world. If you want to keep everything dark, look for black argyle socks with deep red or green patterns on them. Also consider black and white striped or checkered socks instead of argyles.

Shoes are usually tennis shoes like Vans or Converse. These are shoes with a simple construction with a lot of different patterns available. Shoes that tie are preferable to any other kind when dressing emo. Dark-colored tennis shoes with dark-colored laces are the best choice when dressing emo. You may need to replace your white laces with black ones to achieve this look, but it does add to the overall somber appearance.

Grease John Travolta

In 1978 the cult classic musical movie Grease came out. Still today you can go to any Karaoke Bar and be “treated” to a number of people attempting the duets made famous by Olivia Newton John and John Travolta in the movie. Travolta’s character in the movie was Danny Zuko, a teenage kid in a “gang” called the T-Birds who did little more than hang out after school and work on hot rods. Zuko is what is known as a “greaser” and his look is classic and easily achieved.

In the movie Grease, Travolta brought the Danny Zuko character to life with a very simple wardrobe. With the exception of a couple of scenes in the movie, Travolta always dressed in the typical greaser fashion.

Begin with the shirt. All the greasers including Travolta wore only white t-shirts. The t-shirts were just a regular undershirt –crew cut- and were trademarked with a pack of cigarettes rolled up in the sleeve. If you don’t smoke you can accomplish the same look with a deck of cards. The shirt should be a little loose, but not to the point where it puffs up around you. Oddly enough, Travolta always tucked in his T-shirt in the movie.

The jeans worn by Travolta were either a dark blue or black color with the occasional lighter blue. Make sure you get jeans that fit snug, but don’t go crazy and wear skinny jeans. The jeans should be longer than you would normally wear so that you can role the bottoms several times in a flip motion. The role should be about two inches high. The belt that is worn should have a non-flashy buckle and be black in color.

Wear white socks and a pair of black shoes. The shoes should not be too dressy but not too casual either. A pair of Sketcher-type shoes will suffice. Make sure that the shoes are lace-up shoes and not slip-ons.

Most importantly to achieve the look you will need a good leather jacket. The jacket has to be black and should not be long in length. Avoid fancy leather jackets that have all kinds of buckles and zippers and keep the style of the jacket very plain. You can take the fashion all the way by getting “T-Birds” embroidered on the back of your leather jacket if you wish. Whatever you do, never zip up the jacket in any capacity as this was a greaser no-no for Travolta’s character.

Now that you have the style down the rest is a breeze. Simply get a can of “grease” and slick back your hair. Bring a comb with you as a true greaser always combs his hair every chance he gets. You also need to get a pair of dark sunglasses to wear.

Don’t forget the bad boy walk and the cheesy Italian New York accent. Why the accent is one of New York is a mystery as the film was supposed to be taking place in California. Now you can go out and live the greaser way with your new “Travolta fashion” and proudly proclaim, “Grease is the word.”
