In the United States, Ground Hog Day, known as Candlemas in other parts of the world, is a day on which the weather pattern for the following six weeks will be determined, not by science or methods of meteorology, but by a ground hog. That’s right, a ground hog.

German and English immigrants originally brought the custom of predicting the weather patterns in the midst of winter to determine the advent of spring to America. Basically, what happens is this: If a ground hog or wood chuck comes out of his winter hole on February 2nd and sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter are on the horizon. If the ground hog doesn’t see his shadow because of clouds, it means that winter will soon give way to a warm and pleasant spring. Scientific? No. Fun? Yes!

The tradition of Ground Hog Day is not in any way connected to any religious celebration, which makes it different from many other American holiday traditions. The tradition of watching the ground hog in America became popular mainly in Pennsylvania, perhaps due to the amount of German immigrants who made their homes in that state after arriving in America. However, it is in northwestern Pennsylvania that the behavior of the ground hog has accrued the most fame, in a town where the Punxsutawney Ground Hog Club first appeared in 1898. Members of local Punxsutawney town claim they are the ‘home of the traditional weather forecasting ground-hogs’. Every year, town members, and over the years, members from communities throughout the United States, travel to Punxsutawney to watch the ground hog, nicknamed, ‘Punxsutawney Phil’ either scoot back into his winter hole or stay aboveground to explore and eye the hundreds of humans watching his every move. The observance begins as people take a short walk up Gobbler’s Knob in the rolling foothills of the Allegheny Mountains to watch the antics of the ground hog as he emerges from his den. The actions of the mammal are immediately reported to newspapers across the country, and either brings smiles or frowns to those anticipating an early spring.

Groundhog T-shirtAnother rival ground hog club founded in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania that calls itself the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville, was begun in 1908. Their members swear to protect the ground hog from all sorts of tragedies, including ending up in local stew pots. These two groups fan out and watch for the activities of ground hogs in their vicinity every year on February 2nd, sometimes arriving at specific locations before dawn in order to catch every potential move made by the elusive ground hogs. In Quarryville, the day is celebrated with fun and games to mark the eventful day. Other ground hog groups founded in Pennsylvania, among them the Greater Philadelphia Grounghoggers, have spent decade’s carefully watching ground hogs on February 2nd. The antics of these clubs has gained an international reputation, though the National Geographic Society announced that the entire ground hog idea as ridiculous, and weathermen decided long ago that the ground hog as a weather forecaster was only correct 28% of the time.

Nevertheless, Ground Hog Day is recognized and observed around the United States, on February 2nd and offers American citizens an opportunity for good, traditional homespun fun, and people around America join in with laughter and winks. School children are often read the story of ‘Punxsutawney Phil’ and learn about the ground hog mammal, who is given a great deal of attention and respect, for a few days anyway. Ground Hog Day, while not a national holiday, has nevertheless become an ingredient of American tradition and folklore, and will no doubt continue to be observed, if only tongue in cheek.

The t-shirt can be worn for awhile before the birth to build up some excitement for the new baby. When people see it and ask whether this is a big brother, it will remind him that life is about to change and that a new playmate is coming. Whenever you buy new clothing, there always seems to be a strange feeling to the fabric. It tends to very stiff and uncomfortable to wear. This is one of the reasons that many people swear by the fact that T-shirts must be washed prior to use. Once washed the same T-shirt tends to be soft, yielding and relaxed. It is like a totally different shirt. This is often simply because the cotton fibers in the garment have had a chance to relax in the water and return to their natural state after all the stress of production.

Additionally, can be a buildup of excess chemicals on the new T-shirts that may cause them to feel very stiff to the touch. Unless you opt for organic cotton, your T-shirt may have been covered in chemicals even from before it was made. Cotton is one of the crops that receives the most chemical treatments of all. Therefore even in the growing stage the cotton was getting chemicals.

In the plant where it was made into thread and then fabric, it was again treated with chemicals. Again during the sewing process, even more chemicals may have been added to make a shiny appearance and other chemicals were put on it before the item was pressed. Excess dye was used and remained on the garments after purchase. Therefore all these things accumulated to create a rather stiff final product.

By opting for certain types of T-shirts you will not have to deal with the initial stiffness of T-shirts that are so uncomfortable. Combed ring spun cotton is exceptionally soft and is a great choice for a T-shirt you plan to have printed. When opting for this type of T-shirt, remember that it will probably be slightly stiffer than it will be after that first wash but it is much softer than comparable tees.

If you find that your T-shirts are too stiff, opt for pre-washed cotton tees that are custom-made. You will get to choose the fabric, the style, color, fit and design. You can create a perfect T-shirt that you will look forward to wearing time after time, because it is so totally you. Choose to put a favorite photo, drawing or other image on a T-shirt. You can instead print a cool line that is typically you, like a joke, a clever one-liner, something sarcastic or something you feel strongly about. From toys to posters to t-shirts, items that glow in the dark have instant popularity among young and old alike. This mesmerizing effect is caused by a simple chemical reaction referred to as photoluminescence. The most common way of making an object glow in the dark is by incorporating a phosphor, a chemical that gives off visible light. When a phosphor is exposed to light, the light energy excites the electrons. As electrons absorb and then lose this energy, they too release it as light. Some common places phosphors are found include television screens, computer monitors and fluorescent light bulbs. So you’re staring at a group of densely packed, electrically charged phosphors right now!

In order to give off light, a phosphor must regularly recharge by being exposed to an energy source, just like a rechargeable battery after it has been depleted. If the phosphor is not exposed to an energy source, the glow will gradually fade until the electrons return to their original energy level.

There are numerous phosphors, but zinc sulfide and strontium aluminate (which glows much longer) are the two most common ones found in glow-in-the-dark items. These phosphors are mixed right in with the substance that is to glow, such as the plastic that will be molded into a glow-in-the-dark bowling ball or the screen for a glow-in-the-dark t-shirt.

Phosphors are defined by three separate characteristics: the type of energy required to energize their electrons, the color of visible light they produce and their persistence, or how long they will produce light after being energized. In a TV screen, an electron beam hits thousands of tiny elements with phosphors which glow either red, green or blue. In a fluorescent bulb, ultraviolet light energizes a mixture of phosphors that emit a light that appears white to the human eye.

Many materials are photoluminescent, but not all glow for a long time. The fluorescent bulb, for example, will glow as long as it is being energized, but stops immediately upon removal of the energizing light. Phosphorescent materials continue to glow after their energizing light is removed.

Items such as glow sticks produce light in a slightly different way than photoluminescent materials. The glow stick glows due to a chemical reaction called chemoluminescence, which means light energy is produced from a chemical reaction. External light or electricity is not needed. A glow stick contains two chemicals and a fluorescent dye. The chemicals are separated by a glass tube, which when broken begins a chemical reaction that can last from 6-12 hours.

Many years ago, radium paint was used to make watch and clock dials that glowed. As its name suggests, this element is radioactive. However, because it was used in such small amounts and was usually enclosed in a case, the radium paint did not present health risks. The use of radium is no longer allowed, but new watches may use a similar but less dangerous substance.

How Color Changing T-Shirts Work in the Sunlight

T-shirts that change color in the sunlight are extremely popular, especially in certain geographic areas. They make great souvenirs and are a fun novelty item for both children and adults alike. Many people however are simply mind boggled by the idea of a T-shirt that changes color in sunlight. A brief explanation can help you to understand it a little better.

The dye used in dying the T-shirts that change color with heat is called a thermochromic dye. Simply put, thermochromic means that a chemical change in the item causes it to change color with temperature differences. The same principle is used in mood rings, flat thermometers and other heat indicators. Such dyes when used in the fabrication of clothes results in a product which changes color if touched by a warm hand or worn outside in the sun.

In the process of dying such T-shirts there are actually two different dyes which are used. One is the color that you see when the T-shirt is hot, the permanent color. It is a regular dye, but it is covered by the temperature-sensitive dye. The change comes from a chemical reaction, caused by warmth that temporarily blocks the appearance of the thermochromic dye. The thermochromic dye is in microcapsules, which become a part of the T-shirt fabric. These microcapsules change greatly with heat to become transparent. The combination of the thermochromic dye and the permanent dye is the color you see when the tee is cool in temperature.

Such T-shirts have actually been around since the late 1980’s. Some companies that used to produce them have gone out of business because their technology simply wasn’t good enough and the shirts would get damaged easily. However, there are still companies around today, which have invested in a great amount of research and have come up with better technology and a better product.

A similar product also exists, which is a thermochromic print for regular T-shirts. Such prints are typically black and white when cold but they turn multi-colored when exposed to sunlight.  They also rely on thermochromic reactions. Such T-shirts are also very popular in certain regions and as souvenir tees.

These types of T-shirts are lots of fun, but typically do not have a long life expectancy. Therefore, investing in quality T-shirts with fun prints on them is a much better bargain for your buck. In fact, if you choose custom-made T-shirts you can have them made for every mood, every event, every day and in every color. You can opt to print something fun on them, something serious, a statement of fact, a belief, something you are proud of, something you love or a great image that you enjoy.

Why Do People Wear Obama T-Shirts?

Barrack Obama, the president of the United States, has created a furor for politics unlike anything this country has seen in decades. This Democrat has crossed party lines and attracted younger people and African-Americans to the political world in a way that no one before him has ever done. He is the first African-American to hold the office of President and symbolizes real change and a new era for the people of the United States.

Because Obama has achieved what, not long ago, many thought was impossible. He has truly become a hero in today’s culture. Particularly for African Americans, he represents civil rights in a significant way and belongs in the same category as civil rights icons such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. People are proud to wear the image of Barack Obama on a T-shirt because he is a living legend and symbol of hope for the future.

The 44th president of the U.S. is forging ahead with true change during a very difficult economic environment. Despite coming to power during one of the worst recessions in history, Obama has inspired a nation of people that change has arrived and the country will be better for it. Many of his policies are stirring controversy and strong sentiment, as he takes actions that administrations before him never did.

Those who choose to wear Obama T-shirts do so because of what he represents. They have hope for the future because of him. They are confident in his abilities to change the things they perceive as wrong with our great democracy. They are proud of the fact that their country is changing already simply because he has come to power. Many of African-Americans that wear a T-shirt with his image do so because they relate to him. Despite the support and excitement for our new president, there are still anti-Obama T-shirts that can be seen being worn by those who have strong sentiments that Obama was not the best choice for president. Many shirts make jokes and negative comments about the president, while others are more symbolic using the Obama change logo or other images.
