Get Crafty with Custom T-Shirts

What you wear speaks volumes about who you are and what better way to express yourself than with a shirt you yourself designed. No need to get it professionally printed, a hand-made shirt is the perfect way to show off your artistic talents to the world!

The traditional t-shirt crafting mediums–painting and iron-ons-will never go out of style. But recently, new and exciting methods of transforming t-shirts have taken the crafting world by storm. T-shirt crafts aren’t just for the little ones anymore. Crafters of all ages are discovering the joys of wearable art!

The first thing to remember when crafting a t-shirt is your personality. How you express yourself is up to you, just be sure to choose the medium, style and canvas that is right for your personality. The tried-and-true techniques of painting and iron-on transfers are good, dependable decorating techniques. Both require only basic skills–and no pattern reading!–and can be mastered with minimal practice. A steady hand and the ability to follow directions are all you need.

Painting is one of the most traditional methods of garment decoration. Perfect for children and adults alike, painting allows the artist to express him or herself on the most basic level without worrying about complicated or expensive methods. Fabric paints can be purchased at your local craft store and are available in all colors and types. Glitter, puffy, pastel, and even glow-in-the-dark can all be found fairly easily. Pick up a few brushes and you’re ready to paint!

Iron-on transfers are also an easy and fun way to decorate clothing. Pre-made transfer materials can be purchased at your local craft store. Pre-made transfers come in designs ranging from holiday themes to children’s characters. Additionally, transfer paper can be purchased from most office supply stores that can then be used to print transfer designs right off your computer! Personalized text, images, and even photographs can all be printed onto iron-on transfer paper. If you’re new to this method of decorating, be sure to read the directions on the transfer package.

While painting and transfers are both exciting ways to express yourself through t-shirt crafting, it must not b forgotten that the t-shirt itself can be a valuable tool. Painting and decorating change the surface of the shirt, but why not change the shirt itself? In the past few years, t-shirt decorating has become quite popular in an unexpected age-group. Young adults all over the country have begun using their creativity to re-design shirts by altering the shape of the garment itself. Paints and transfers are no longer required to make your shirt as unique as you are! The sleeve length, neck shape, and fit of a shirt all can easily be altered by simply cutting the material. A stodgy old crew-neck can become a trendy v-neck in a matter of seconds and an oversized shirt takes only a few minutes to be cut and tied to fit the shape of its owner. The special knit of the garment keeps the t-shirt from fraying, even after washing.

How It’s Done: Embroidered T-Shirts

Choosing the right design for a custom t-shirt can be tricky, especially in the office. It may seem impossible to choose a design that both the CEO and your co-workers will approve of but the answer is simple: embroidery.

Embroidery takes the idea of a custom t-shirt to the next level. One step beyond the age-old tradition of silk-screening, embroidery still allows the customer to choose his or her own design but the result is a much cleaner and up-scale product.

The embroidery process may seem simple to the average customer, but if you choose to design your own shirt, you will soon realize that this procedure is a bit more complicated. Embroidery is commonly seen as a three step process: artwork, conversion and production.

The artwork stage is where the image for the t-shirt is created. The customer presents his or her desired image to the artist creating the shirts and he or she works with the client to create a final design for the shirts. Some original designs may need to be slightly altered in size or style to fulfill the needs of both the client and the t-shirt artist.

Once the design has been finalized, the conversion stage of the embroidery process begins. Conversion is a complicated process that requires the two-dimensional image to be converted into a three-dimensional, thread-based design. Nowadays, most custom t-shirt companies go about this digitally, using specific computer programs to convert the paper image into a digital file that programs the sewing machine directly. The stitch type, size, and color are all recorded digitally. Once the new, three-dimensional design is programmed into the machine, the final stage of the process can begin: production.

Production may seem like the easiest stage of the process but, in truth, it can be extremely complicated for the machine operator. While the image was digitized during the “conversion” step, the operator still needs to program the machine with the correct sewing speed and sequence of stitches. The operator then loads the appropriate colors and amount of thread needed for the design. Finally, each t-shirt is individually loaded onto the machine, embroidered, and removed.

Although the production phase of the embroidery process is commonly seen as the last step, it is always necessary to examine each garment for quality and consistency. Loose threads and excess backing material must be trimmed and the inspector looks for uniformity in each design. Once the t-shirts have passed this quality inspection, they are ready to be packaged for delivery or pick-up by the client.

The entire embroidery process can seem a bit daunting at first but a polished, professional product is well-worth the effort. An expert, classic embroidered t-shirt is the perfect solution for corporate garments, professional uniforms or any other situation that requires a more refined appearance.

Do Too Many T-Shirt Shops Cheapen Tourist Areas Such as New Orleans?

The French Quarter in New Orleans is threatening to enforce older ordinances that limit the number of t-shirt shops in the city. Shop owners are frustrated with the city trying to limit their businesses rather than letting the market decide what should be sold.

One city councilman believes there are too many shops and that t-shirt shops cheapen the atmosphere. Interviews with tourists suggest that they think the t-shirt shops just make it look like New Orleans. Under the current regulations there can be no more than two t-shirt shops within 600 feet of each other. The city will start enforcing the limitations and tighten up the permitting process.

Mischa Barton

Celebrities Wear Random T-Shirts – Mischa Barton – “Let’s Go Bite Some Butts” T-Shirt

People definitely notice when celebrities wear t-shirts with slogans. If you are a t-shirt company getting a celebrity to wear your t-shirt would really put your company on the map. But sometimes celebrities just wear really random t-shirts. Mischa Barton was recently spotted wearing a random t-shirt with an image of a dog wearing a hat that says “Hawk Hounds” with the phrase “Let’s go bite some butts” below. I am not sure if that is a dog catcher company t-shirt or just a random joke t-shirt but it is kind of funny.

Get Dressed and Save the Earth

Earth Day is a very important day, especially these days. The Earth is in trouble, and a lot of people are putting in a lot of time and effort to give something back. For some this means changing their habits by recycling or eating organic foods or using less electricity. For others it means volunteering outdoors, planting a tree each year, or writing poetry in reflection of the beauty of the Earth. Some who can afford it donate money to organizations trying to take care of the Earth.

But other people—too many people, probably—let Earth Day slip by without thinking about it at all. They might see a headline here or there that reminds them of the special day. But they are too busy or stressed out or distracted with other daily worries to take time out to help make the Earth a safe, healthy place for the coming generations. It takes a lot of effort to stop and decide to change your habits, or even to take a day to reflect and commit something small to a cause like saving the Earth.

Are you wondering how you can participate in Earth Day? Do you want to call people’s attention to the importance of the day but aren’t sure how to do it? Well, how about making a special Earth Day t-shirt? You could make one just for yourself, to wear while you volunteer or go to work or school. On the front you could have an image that reminds you of the beauty of the Earth—of what you are trying to save. On the back you could have some text that will help people think about the Earth and tell them how they can figure out a way to help. Perhaps you could provide a link or a phone number to nearby volunteer opportunities, or information sites where people can go to find out what is happening to the Earth, and to learn how their lifestyles can help or hurt it.

You could also always make t-shirts for a lot of people to wear. You could make t-shirts for your whole class or for your office. If people receive a free t-shirt designed by their friend in honor of Earth Day, they are not likely to forget what day it is. Then they will have the t-shirt and the information you put on it to keep, and they can perhaps start an Earth Day tradition of their own with their families or roommates.

Making Earth Day t-shirts is a way to spread knowledge about Earth Day and its issues without making people feel guilty or pressured. It’s more of a way to create more enthusiasm for the day and for every other day in which helping the Earth is an important part of life. If the message on your t-shirts is a positive one, you can help get people excited, which will make them more likely to go off on their own next time and contribute. Good luck, and happy Earth Day!

Get Engaged and Show the World with a T-Shirt

Being engaged is often one of the happiest times in a person’s life. You have found some one that you dearly love, someone that complements you better than any one else in the world. And to top it all off, that person feels the same way about you. You decide that you have reached the point in your relationship when it’s only natural that you should head to the chapel. Once you’ve picked the date, a whirlwind of events ensues.

One of the things that characterizes the engagement period quite a bit is the process of planning the wedding. In fact, most people equate wedding planning and engagement in their minds. This is probably due to the fact that the moment the bride slips that ring on her finger, she begins imagining her perfect day. The perfect church or garden to host the big event is usually first on the menu. Choosing a design for the cake and a great baker to do the job follows shortly thereafter. Deciding what colors and flowers she likes can be a perplexing ordeal. Oh, and let’s not forget the dress. The search for the perfect dress is no small task in the wedding planning process.

With all of this decision making and logistical planning, the bride is likely to get a little drained and overwhelmed before too long. Creating her dream wedding is exciting. For many brides, however, planning a wedding can be a full time job! You don’t often see the groom fretting over his dream tux. Finding the perfect tux is usually a one stop shopping experience for the groom and his wedding party. Grooms that aren’t feeling the heat during their upcoming nuptials due to all the planning need to show their brides-to-be how much they appreciate all their hard work.

If you’re approaching your wedding day, you’ve probably bought your bride-to-be more than one gift. We know at least one of those gifts involved a very special piece of jewelry. But this “thanks for planning our wedding” gift needs to be a one of a kind. Show her you care with an originally designed t-shirt just for her. A shirt can communicate whatever you feel to your fiancée. This is an opportunity to her how you feel about her in a way that she can wear over and over again. There is no doubt that she’ll be impressed by your thoughtfulness and originality.

Now if you really want to give her a gift, have one made for yourself as well. Maybe choose a phrase to print on your original shirt that tells her how excited you are to be her husband and that she’s your one and only. What bride wouldn’t love a shirt that says “I love my wife” in her husband’s closet. Wear your love and devotion on your very sleeve, literally. Diamonds are a girls best friend, but a uniquely printed shirt designed by her new hubby will put a lasting smile on your bride-to-be’s face.

Share your Memories: Family Reunion T-Shirts

Planning a family reunion requires a lot of time and organization. Make your event memorable for the entire family by creating something everyone can take home. Ordering customized t-shirts for the whole gang is hassle free when you shop online. You can start with a generic theme like “Davis Family Reunion. Oswald’s Park 2004.” But, don’t stop there! Use a favorite family photo or a family tree. Use the year, a family theme and nicknames. Or, shop from online libraries for artwork, inspiration and motivation.

There’s something for everyone. Try something sentimental and use the family crest or a tree with members’ names with “Baker Family Established October 21, 1945.” Or, “We are family.” Or, use your family’s ethnic flag with “McAllister. American since 1912, Irish Forever.”

Have some laughs with individualized shirts. Use the same artwork and put individual names on each shirt. Try “I’m the Nana.” “I’m the good-looking aunt.” “I’m the drama queen in this family.”

One family asked the great-grandchildren for the names of their great aunts and uncles. These new nicknames from the kids marked the shirts for the 2007 reunion. Everyone had a good laugh when John went from his lifelong nickname of John Junior to “UJ.” The teenagers said it was short for Uncle John.

Does your family have a favorite song or movie? Use it on your t-shirts. Try, “My Big, Fat, Greek Reunion. The Speryos. 2008.” Or, how about a favorite phrase of a family member? The Long family poked fun at Aunt Anne one year with these shirts, “Amen to that!”

Family reunion shirts are good for more than just laughs and memories at the party. They are great for spotting the family if your reunion is at a big public venue. One family had bright, Kelly green shirts for their 2006 party at an amusement park. It was easy to find one another among the games and rides.

It’s easy to order online. Pick artwork from online libraries or design your own. Add text, names, dates and themes. There are thousands of fonts to choose from online. Then pick shirt styles, sizes and colors. See the proof online and order. Here’s a tip from the pros: order more of the larger size shirts than smaller ones. People are typically happy to wear a shirt that’s a bit too big over a shirt that’s too small. Expect delivery to take a couple weeks.

The McDonald family holds a contest every year to create their family reunion t-shirts. It’s a big family with six children, 19 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren! To keep their annual party organized they form committees. It’s a real honor to be on the t-shirt committee and select the winner. Last year, they put together 30 years of shirts and made them into a quilt for grandma and grandpa. It was a scrapbook of family parties and memories. The quilt made for a very special gift.

Don’t forget to use your website. It’s becoming more and more common to set up the whole party online. If you’re using a family website or yahoo group to stay connected during the planning process, put the website right on the t-shirt! It makes it easy to remember once everyone starts posting their pictures from the party.

Your family reunion t-shirts are sure to be a hit. Give everyone a reunion gift they’ll remember for generations!

Anthropology T-Shirts are Great Cultural Artifacts for Today

Anthropology is the study of humanity, civilization and culture. It is most often accomplished through long-term study and immersion in the culture in question, usually as a participant observer. Quite often when people think of anthropology, they think of anthropological digs, where people are uncovering information about long gone cultures. In reality, the study of cultures that still exist is a much more common, practical and useful form of anthropology. It is the focus of most anthropology studies and can tell us a great deal of things that are important to know about what sets us apart from other groups of people.

Anthropology has been around since the 1800’s and has evolved and changed greatly since then. Anthropology developed in North America with interest in native Indian groups that lived her before western Europeans moved to this part of the world and “discovered” it. Cultural comparisons play a huge part in anthropology, because everything is relative when it comes to culture. Normal for one culture is not for another. Therefore any study you read on a particular culture will be slightly colored by the culture of the anthropologist who did it.

Anthropology has many different aspects that make it a unique type of subject. This study of humanity is said to be made up of studying all humanity that has ever existed and all the different parts of each group of humanity. There are four different specialized areas that make up anthropology:
– physical or biological anthropology
– socio-cultural anthropology
– archeology
– linguistic anthropology.
Each of these is its own unique specialty and has its own areas to focus on.

There are many other fields of study that can overlap some of the things that interest and concern anthropology. Sociology, psychology, social sciences and physical sciences all touch anthropology, however, it is still a study that is unique in itself and can not be completely or accurately covered by another. It comprises the cultural aspects that set one group apart from another and these include: folklore, tradition, knowledge, beliefs, laws, art, morals, customs, habits and anything else that makes up the society.

For an anthropology buff, nothing says how much you love the study of cultures like anthropology T-shirt. You can get a custom-made shirt that talks about anthropology in general, specific cultural studies, or the fact that you love the subject. You can get a fun shirt that says “I am a cultural anthropologist doing a study on your culture. Do something interesting.”

For anyone who belongs to an anthropology group or faculty, having custom-made tees made up for the members is a great idea. It shows group unity and pride of membership. It also promotes the existence of the group or presence of the faculty. Custom tees can even be used as fundraisers for groups. Anyone who is a present student of anthropology, an alumnus of the study or even anyone intrigued by the subject would love to have anthropology T-shirt to wear.

How to Put Your Child’s Artwork on a T-Shirt

Children are a blessing for certain. But raising them is undoubtedly one of the hardest things that you will ever do. It is easy to become completely overwhelmed with the demands of school let alone after school activities and weekend plans. The notebooks, book bags, papers, homework and artwork pile up and at the end of the day you are left wondering which way is up. The demands of your own life often take a back-seat to the needs and desires of your children and the push and pull of parenthood begins to consume your life.

While these are surely crazy times, they are also some of the most exciting and full years of your life and you must always be thinking of ways to preserve them for the future. Photographs are an easy option. By taking lots of pictures of school events, friends and family, you are ensuring that you and your children alike with remember these years down the road. But with all this worry about school, homework, and books, it is easy to loose sight of the smaller things that come home in the children’s backpacks.

A child’s artwork often takes a backseat to photographs when thinking of preserving family memories. This is quite understandable as the materials children for art projects are often not the sturdiest and keeping a set of paper mache planets is not always possible. So why not transform some of their precious artwork into a functional piece of clothing!

Artwork of any kind, including your little one’s drawings, paintings and scribbles, can easily be transferred onto t-shirts, canvas bags and other articles of clothing. There are many methods of transferring.  Any flat work of art can be scanned into a computer using a personal or business scanner. If you do not have a scanner at home, many copy centers, and office supply stores have scanners that can be used in-store for a small fee. Once your image has been scanned into the computer, you attach it to your t-shirt with special iron-on transfer paper that can be purchased at craft stores or office supply stores. Be sure to read the directions on the package as iron-on transfer require specific heat setting on your iron.  Or, to get a really good print that will last much longer than an iron-on you can upload your design online and have someone else print the artwork on the t-shirt.

Customizing a t-shirt with your child’s artwork is an amazing way to preserve the memory of these very special, if hectic, years. Parents can wear them proudly and show off their little ones’ budding talents at the store, on the street, or in the office. Customized t-shirts also make incredible gifts. What grandparent wouldn’t beam at the idea of wearing their grandchild’s special artwork around town.

Pink T-Shirts

Wear Pink T-Shirts to Raise Awareness of Bullies

Two students at a Nova Scotia high school organized a pink shirt campaign to support those who have been bullied. Pink shirts were chosen because a 9th grade student was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt at school. Over 50 pink t-shirts were passed out at the school.

Pink T-Shirts

The pink shirt bully campaign spread throughout Canada, the U.S. and Japan and as a result Nova Scotia Premier Rodney MacDonald declared the second Thursday of each school year in his province as Stand Up Against Bullying Day. The result of the campaign was that some bullies left the school and others were expelled for incidents that occurred following the start of the campaign. One bully defecated on a students car, left a dead mouse being stuffed into the vent of a car, and threats of physical violence.

The students hope their pink t-shirt and actions will result in less bullying. One student said “We know we can’t demolish bullying, but we can teach kids to stand up and not accept situations.” Read more about it in the Sudbury Star.

Anyone who witnesses bullying can report bullying online at www.bullyhelp.org, which allows people to report incidents and then the web site staff will contact school staff. Also check out Christy Clark’s Wear Pink bullying site.

An Example of T-Shirt Fundraising – Selling T-Shirts to Help a High School Leukemia Patient

We like to highlight inspiring stories of individuals who use t-shirts to raise money for causes that are important to them. The owner of Sardo’s Pizza in Largo, Florida started selling pink t-shirts with his late sister and 18 year old Emily Lester who suffered a relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in January. Lester is currently receiving extensive chemotherapy treatment for the disease while awaiting a second bone marrow transplant at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis. Sardo is trying to help Lester with the large hospital bills. To help out or buy a t-shirt to support Lester contact Sardo. You can also check out tbnweekly for more information on this story.

T-Shirt Ideas for Cycling Enthusiasts

Custom cycling t-shirts are perfect for a number of different occasions. Whether you are a cyclist, an event organizer or even a friend or family member of a cyclist, there is a t-shirt that is just perfect for you. It may take time to find this shirt but once you do, you will have a way to show your love for the sport or your support for your favorite cyclist.

Wearing your heart on your sleeve is one way to show the world how much you love cycling. Unless you have a group of friends who also enjoy the sport, finding people to talk to about the sport can be difficult. Friends and family members who don’t understand your love of riding a bike may zone out when you talk about your latest ride. This can be frustrating but you can let a message t-shirt do the talking for you. This way, you aren’t boring your loved ones with non-stop chatter about your sport of choice but they will get the message.

Event organizers might want to consider a number of different t-shirt options when they organize a race. Whether it is a full or a half century race, a multi-day staged race or a short road race, t-shirts can be used for a number of different purposes. T-shirts can be given out during packet pick-up of a cycling race to provide racers with a memento of the occasion. Racers can opt to wear the t-shirt during the race or can save it for a later occasion.

Event organizers may also want to make t-shirts a mandatory part of the race. Requiring racers to wear the t-shirts can help in a number of ways. One way to do this is to create custom shirts for each age group. The t-shirts can have different colors for different age groups. Or they can have the age group emblazoned on the back of the shirt. This makes the competition more exciting. Racers can easily determine whether riders ahead of them are in their age group. Seeing a direct competitor just a few yards ahead can really motivate a cyclist. Also spectators can easily see when the first finisher in each age group is approaching the finish line.

Still another way for event organizers to use custom t-shirts is to create shirts for finishers and for winners. Many racing events give all racers a commemorative t-shirt when they check in for the race but most racers have a greater appreciation for finisher’s t-shirts and winner’s t-shirts. Customizing these t-shirt with text that shows the event details is an excellent idea.

Even if you don’t own a bike but want to show your support for the cyclist in your life, there is custom t-shirt that is perfect for you. These t-shirts are a great idea if you are planning to cheer a friend or family member on at a race. One great idea for this type of shirt is to design a t-shirt with your loved one’s name and a few words of encouragement. Another option is to create a t-shirt with the silhouette of him on his bike.

Obama Kim

Another Celebrity Spotted Wearing a Barack Obama T-Shirt

Another celebrity was recently spotted wearing an Obama T-Shirt. Well actually, I am not sure if this person really qualifies as a celebrity but…Kim Kardashian was seen wearing a t-shirt with the phrase “Obama is my Homeboy” walking around LAX.

Kim is a American socialite, television personality who is also known for a leaked “home video”. While I don’t think that Kim is giving Obama the extra edge from her support anytime a celebrity or person of interest wears such a shirt it does bring extra attention.

Obama Kim

This is not the first time Kim has been seen wearing an Obama t-shirt. Back in June 2007 Kim was photographed wearing an Obama for Change t-shirt.
