Bra history

History of the Bra

Bra history

Everyone knows what a brassier or a bra is. This type of undergarment is specifically made to cover, lift, and support a woman’s breasts. Since the earliest recording in time, women have been wearing some type of support for their breast though these undergarments were not always known as brassieres.

These days bras are not just used for coverage and support, but many are made that will actually enhance the appearance of a woman’s breast. Here is how the modern day bra came to be:

•    2500 BC: Way back when on the Greek isle of Crete, warrior woman began to wear a garment that resembled a bra that actually lifted their breasts up above their clothing. This type of bra actually left the breast of these warrior women exposed for all to see.
•    4th Century: In the early 4th Century a garment knows as the Chemise made its first appearance. At the time, the Chemise was gathered into a square or a round neckline, was usually long sleeved, and was often decorated with frill and finished off with ruffles.
•    Until the 15th Century: In those easy times, women actually wanted to de-emphasize their breasts. This saw the birth of the corset and other devices that were all designed to actually draw attention away from the breasts.
•    15th Century: in the 15th Century, an undergarment known as the bodice took center stage as women started to accentuate the fact that they had breasts. The bodice was designed to flatten the lower part of the breast and push upper part of the breast up and thus create cleavage and the appearance of a rounder, fuller breast. In a sense, the bodice was the early form of the push-up bra of today.
•    1800’s: The 1800’s saw a whole host of different inventions all aimed at breast support. While many came and went, the corset held onto much popularity until there was the invention of what would evolve into the modern day bra. This new undergarment supported the breasts, but had no laces or eyelets and was considerably smaller than a corset.
•    1907: Vogue Magazine uses the word brassier for the first time and by 1912 the term was in the Oxford English Dictionary.
•    1920s: The age of the ‘flappers’ saw a huge surge in bra popularity. At that time the flat-chested look was back in and there were bras that were actually designed to flatten the breasts instead of support them.
•    1930s to 1960s: In this time frame many advances were made in the world of the bra including the introduction of the first bikini. This time period also brought the evolution of the elastic bra to the forefront and since the 1960a, the form and the function of the bra has not changed all that dramatically except for the use of more comfortable materials.

These days fashion dictates much of how a bra is designed. It is not even uncommon anymore to see a woman wearing a brassier type top and nothing else at all. While women will no doubt always wear some type of bra to cove, support and even lift their breasts, the life of the bra has certainly been an interesting one that has seen many changes and upgrades and will no doubt see more in the future.

Italy

What to Wear to Italy

Italy

Italy is a place filled with wonderful cuisine and all the romance you can handle. The country is filled with so much to do you will find it hard to see everything you want the first time there. To get the most out of your trip to Italy you will want to try to dress like the locals. Why? When you blend in you tend to be treated a bit better as nobody likes an ‘annoying tourist.’

Some foreign countries are very strict when it comes to fashion and while Italy is a bit more lenient that most you still have to go about your ‘local look’ in a specific way. Here are some tips to keep you looking more like a local and less like a tourist when going to Italy:

•    Going for casual: Clothing seems to be on the pricey side in Italy and for that reason many who live there only have a limited number of outfits. They supplement this lack of clothing by mixing and matching what they do have to be sure that they are always wearing a fresh look. This is important to keep in mind because an Italian’s idea of casual and an American’s idea of casual are apples and oranges. If you go to Italy and wear your typical jeans, t-shirt, and Red Sox cap you will pegged as a tourist in no time at all. Instead, go for a nice pair of slacks and a lightweight, long sleeved button down shirt.
•    Shorts: Shorts are almost taboo in Italy. If you do see men wearing a pair they will come down to at least their knees. You will never see women wearing shorts unless you are at the beach. If possible just avoid the shorts, but if you feel you must absolutely wear a pair then let the local rules preside.
•    Shoes: One of the most beautiful sights in Italy is the cobble stone streets. As pretty as they are though, they can wreak havoc on your feet. You will want to have a very comfortable pair of shoes with you that have a rather thick sole to help absorb the abuse your feet will get. As far as all the American favorites like mules, flip-flops, cowboy boots, and sneakers, leave them at home because they will do you little good in Italy. A good thing to do is buy your Italian walking shoes a couple of weeks before your trip so you have time to get them broken in. Wear them everywhere you go for the days leading up to your trip as this will ensure the utmost comfort once you do start walking all over the cobblestone of Italy.
•    Wearing cameras: Avoid wearing your cameras around your neck. With technology as good as it is today you can find many small cameras that will take great pictures and fit either in your pocket or your purse. Nothing screams ‘I am a tourist’ like cameras around the neck.

Remember, nobody likes the loud and obnoxious tourist so keep it low key while visiting Italy and do your best to blend in with the locals.

England

What to Wear in England

England

As the old saying goes, ‘When in Rome do as the Romans do.’ Well when you are planning on visiting England you should know how to dress so that you don’t stick out like a typical American tourist. It is important to note that many people in England get their sense of style by watching the starts of television and screen. That being said the fashion is one that tends to change on a fairly regular basis.

Here are some tips to help you decide what to wear when you are in England:

•    Loud colors: In England the colors of choice seem to be loud and bright. Many countries overseas like to stick with the darker and drabber colors, but England isn’t one of them. Yellows, purples, blues, and reds seem to be a favorite among many the locals.
•    Wild design: This is especially for the woman. Don’t be afraid to go with a totally wild and outrageous design or pattern. Many people in England sport styles and patterns that may be considered to over the edge here in America, but over there it is just another day in the life of England.
•    Get a good coat: It seems that everyone over in England has a coat on them most of the time. These coats can range from a sports jacket to a nice half-coat, or even a leather jacket, but they are almost always wearing them.
•    Shoe wear: Men tend to gravitate towards the boot look or the low top sneaker look. Their low top sneakers that they like are the same style as the low top Converse that can be found at almost any store right here in America. Women like to wear a lot of closed toed heels that are a variety of wild colors.
•    Scarves: When it is cold out it is very common to see both men and women sporting scarves. These scarves will serve two purposes. The first will be fashion and the second will be function by way of helping to keep the person warm.
•    Accessorize big: Women in England like to accessorize in a big way. They will wear big hanging necklaces and flashy jewelry. They also tend to cut their hair on the shorter and wilder side these days.
•    When in doubt: A great rule of thumb for anyone about to visit England is to pack lightly and bring some extra money. This way you can check into your hotel and then hit the streets and get ideas on how to dress by seeing what the locals are all wearing. Keep in mind that one region may dress a bit differently than the others so if you are planning on visiting more than one area in England than you will not want to spend your entire bankroll on the first day.

The good thing about dressing in England is it seems to be all about fun. The styles and colors over there are wild and vivid and allow for a great deal of leeway when choosing what it is you want to wear.

Mandy Moore

How to Dress like Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore is a singer, song writer, actress, and most recently, a fashion icon. She has sold over 10 million records worldwide and is fast becoming one of the who’s who in Hollywood. Her popularity with the younger generations makes her style one that is often imitated. Her chic yet elegant way of dressing gives her a truly unique look that can be replicated with the right garments.

Achieving the Mandy Moore look is as much about confidence as it is about what you put on. She seems to have a spring in her step no matter where she is or what she is wearing. Keeping that in mind, here are some tips on how you too can dress like Mandy Moore:

•    Be colorful: Moore is often seen in many bright colored outfits. It is not uncommon for her to wear yellows, pinks, peaches, and any other color that gives off a bright persona. These types of colors seem to mirror her personality and she is as bright and cheery as the colors she wears.
•    Dresses: Moore loves to be casual with dresses. She is often spotted wearing a strapless sun dress that comes down just above her knees. When you go sundress shopping remember to go with fun, bright colors. The dress should fit you nicely, but it should not be tight. Every now and then get funky with your dresses and go for a multi-colored one as Moore has been known to do this from time to time.
•    Formal wear: Here is the exception to the bright and cheery color rule. Moore often shows up at a red carpet event wearing a tasteful black dress. Make sure you choose a dress and not a gown as Moore prefers to be comfortable while walking down the red carpet as opposed to being trailed by part of a flowing gown.
•    Shoes: Moore loves her shoes. The shoes she will wear will be dictated by the outfit she has on. She usually wears heels of some sort and has been spotted in high heels, pumps, flats, and sandals. When you choose your colors of shoes, make sure you are matching them to your outfit like Moore does.
•    Accessories: Moore seems to prefer bigger earrings that hang down as opposed to studded earrings. She can also be found wearing a sensible gold chain from time to time.
•    Hair and Make-up: Moore’s hair style is usually ultra simple. Part your hair in the middle and then style it lightly. If you are feeling brash, you can give it some loose curls as Moore will sometimes do. When you go for your make-up bag, grab some darker rouge to help bring out your cheekbones as Moore does. Go easy on the lipstick and use lighter colors that don’t scream for attention to be drawn to your lips. Above all else, try to maintain the natural look.

All that is left for you to do is to practice your singing and acting and you too can be like Mandy Moore; at least in the way you dress.

Sweater vest

What to wear with a Sweater vest

Sweater vest

When the word “sweater vest” is spoken, a lot of people’s minds are invaded by images of a horrible knitted monstrosity handmade by Aunt Gertrude with rainbow yarn. And then, horror of horrors, your mom made you wear the grotesque thing to family gatherings. But don’t despair. If you find sweater vests reappearing in the collections of many popular designers, there’s good news ahead. Today’s sweater vest is much more sophisticated and easy to wear than some of its predecessors.

Sweater vests are a quick and inexpensive way to dress up any outfit. For guys, add a sweater vest to a fitted tee (even one with stains from those hot wings you had a while back) and you have instant class.  Throwing on a sweater vest can avoid the “dress shirt and tie” scenario and still keep one looking polished. For girls, a long, textured sweater vest can keep off the chill of early spring or autumn mornings – and delay the arrival of the bulky winter coat.

Here are some ideas to keep in mind when shopping for a stylish addition to your wardrobe.

•    Both guys and girls should choose a sweater vest style that is fitted, not loose and shapeless. The current silhouette is mostly tailored, so the sweater vest should hug your body while still allowing enough room for a t-shirt or other shirt underneath.

•    Generally, choose sweater vests that are of a solid color or a very subtle print. Anything else could conjure up images of Aunt Gertrude’s rainbow sweater vest we mentioned above, and run the risk of making you look dated. A solid color will not only look modern, it will also add more flexibility to your wardrobe because you can pair it with a wide variety of outfits. Ladies, check out this black, open-front sweater vest by Calvin Klein which can go casual or dressy, depending on where you’re headed.

•    The thickness of the sweater vest you choose should be determined by your personal preference and the overall climate of your area. A down-filled puffy vest can be a great way to stay warm when the temperatures start to fall. Try a winter white vest over a long-sleeved t-shirt and tailored jeans for a classic cold weather look. For the summer, sweater vests should be downsized to lighter fabrics such as cotton or silk.

•    Girls can pair sweater vests with everything from jeans to skirts. Go for a preppy look by wearing a crew-necked sweater vest over a crisp white shirt and plaid skirt, and top it off with some great high-heeled boots. Guys can create a dressy casual look by wearing a sweater vest over a fitted t-shirt and jeans, or go more formal by wearing it over a long-sleeved button-down shirt and slacks. The possibilities are endless!

•    Sweater vests and t-shirts are a marriage made in heaven, so have fun mixing up your wardrobe combinations. Try long-sleeved and short-sleeved tees with sweater vests of different fabrics and textures appropriate for the season.
Sweater vests are a fabulous way to add both function and style to your look. They’re also quite affordable, so have fun experimenting with them!

Cardigan

What to Wear with a Cardigan

Cardigan

Cardigan sweaters make for a classic look and are now making their way into the styles and fashions of today. Because there are a number of different styles of cardigans that means there are a number of different ways that you can go about dressing up your cardigans. This will of course depend on how dressy you want to come off and what the occasion calls for.

Though it may not seem like it, cardigans can be paired with almost anything that is in your closet and worked into a nice chic look for you. Here are some examples of how you too can wear your cardigans in ways you may have never thought possible:

•    With a dress: You can start off with a longer dress that has dark colors and a wild pattern. Take your button up cardigan and wear it over top but leave it unbuttoned. Tie in the entire outfit with a skinny belt that is a loud color such as gold. If the cardigan is dark you can wear dark colored stockings and finish off the look with a classic pair of black heels.
•    With work clothes: You can use a classic cardigan as a perfect substitute for a blazer. This will go perfect with a gray colored skirt, a white blouse that is frilly towards the top and a pair of black pumps. You can get a black cardigan for this look or even get a little risky and go with a dark purple. This look also works with gray dress pants in substitution of the skirt.
•    With jeans: If you can pull of a pair of skinny jeans then you can pair them with a long sleeved t-shirt and top it with a chunky, sleeveless cardigan. This looks even better with a pair of tall boots or a ballet flap. Be sure that the chunky cardigan that you wear with your skinny jeans is a longer type as this will help with the elongated look.
•    Classy look: So you think that you can’t wear a cardigan to get dressy huh? Well think again because you can get a very classy looking sequin cardigan and wear it with full metallic colored skirt and you will look good enough to go just about anywhere. You can finish off the look with some matching open-toe heels and bigger and flashier earrings.
•    Accessories: No matter what type of cardigan you are going with you can accessorize really as you see fit. Of course if you are wearing a long sleeved cardigan then there will be no need for you to wear bracelets but anything else will typically go. Do some experimenting and mix and match accessories such as scarves to see what will look the best with the cardigans you wear.

Cardigans have certainly come a long way and are now in the mainstream of fashion. By using your imagination and ingenuity you too can look good no matter what kind of cardigan you wear.

Skirt

What to Wear with a Skirt

Skirt

For a woman, one of the most versatile pieces of clothing that they own is a skirt. Skirts can be worn in an office environment and can also be worn when heading out for a wild night out with the girls. Because there are a variety of different lengths that skirts come in there are many possibilities when it comes to the outfits that can be put together using skirts.

What you will wear with your skirt depends on what type of skirt it is. Here are some different fashion ideas for you utilizing several of the different skirt lengths:

•    Miniskirt: The miniskirt can be worn as one piece or it can be layered on top of a pair of black leggings. While a mini skirt by itself is bit more on the risqué side, miniskirts with leggings still look great and can offer you just a bit more coverage. No matter what type of miniskirt you like, a white blouse or t-shirt usually goes quite well with the look. If it is on the colder side a nice touch is a lightweight black leather jacket and the shoes can be either a dark pair of pumps or heels. You can also go for broke with a pair of gladiator shoes that come up to the bottom of your knee. This is a look that is gaining a lot of popularity in Hollywood.
•    Mid length skirt: A mid length skirt is one that usually comes down to the top of your knees. These types of skirts look great for office wear. Pairing a gray mid length skirt with a white blouse that is collared and topping it off with a gray blazer is a sharp and sophisticated look for your office job. Finish the look of sophistication with a dark colored pair of pumps or flats which will add some comfort and style all at the same time.
•    Long skirts: Long skirts are those that hang down below your knees and can even come down to about your ankles. These skirts are paired nicely with sweaters and other tops that are long sleeved when it is cool outside. For warmer weather these longer skirts make a nice mate to a sleeveless shirt with a light jacket or wrap accompanying it. Footwear with this type of skirt can range from sandals to flats but comfort is the key.
•    Pull-over skirts: These skirts do what they sound like they would and simply pull over your head. They are typically both sleeveless and strapless or they are tied into place with one tie at the neck line. These skirts generally go really well with a pair of black leggings or even a pair of jeans. This is the perfect look for a nice pair of high heels.

No matter what kind of skirts you like to wear you just need to mix and match and do some fun experimentation and you too will be able to look your best no matter how long the skirt you are wearing is.

Rock climbing

What to Wear Rock Climbing

Rock climbing

Rock climbing can be a great way to get your adrenalin pumping and will certainly give you some thrills you won’t soon forget. While it is very important that you learn about all the gear you will need and how it all functions, it is equally as important to know what to wear when you go rock climbing.

When you dress for a day of rock climbing you have to consider what kind of climb it is and what the weather is going to be like for the day before you can accurately get dressed for it. Here are some tips to help you figure out what to wear on your next rock climbing adventure:

•    Base layer: If you are doing a climb in a cooler part of the year you will want to go with a base layer that is close to your skin to help keep you insulated and thus warm. A good undershirt and a pair of boxer briefs are usually a good choice when dressing for the cooler climbs.
•    Shirts: It is essential that you choose shirts that will let you keep your elbows, wrists, and shoulders free so that they can do all the essential climbing work that will be required of them. If the weather is colder than you will want to go with a longer sleeved shirt as this will help keep you warm but you must be sure that the shirt doesn’t hinder your shoulder movement whatsoever. You can gain further warmth by wearing a vest over top of the shirt as it will help to warm you while leaving all the vital parts of the arm free and clear. On a warmer climb you can opt for a t-shirt.
•    Pants: This is a personal preference and is again usually dictated by the weather. Most rock climbers like to wear shorts that stretch and are durable when doing a shorter climb in warm weather. For a colder climb you may want to go with stretchy pants that are both lightweight and water resistant. Never wear jeans as they will not only hinder your movements but will also absorb any moisture and have you feeling soggy and uncomfortable.
•    Jackets: In extremely cold climate climbs you may need a jacket. Again you will want to go with the most lightweight you can find and be sure that your movements are not hindered. You should always have a wind breaker or lightweight insulated jacket with you as you never know when a warm weather site will turn cold as the sun starts to go down.
•    Shoes: When preparing for your rock climbing adventure you will first need to get a pair of shoes that are designed specifically for rock climbing. These shoes should fit tightly and allow for a lot of movement so that you will be able to get your feet into tight spots if need be.
•    Helmet: While this is not actually a piece of clothing it is essential gear for anyone who wants to be a rock climber. When it comes to your head and what’s inside it you should never take a chance.

Clothing can be just as important as any gear that you will bring with you on the rock climb and if you plan properly you will be able to conquer the rock with greater ease and much greater comfort.

San Diego

What To Wear In San Diego

San Diego

The city of San Diego is a bustling city of commerce and tourism. In fact, it is second only to Los Angeles as the biggest city in the state of California. On the coast of the Pacific Ocean, San Diego has unique geography featuring hills and canyons which separate the city into different neighborhoods.

The temperature there is great with very little fluctuation in temperatures from summer to winter. Daytime averages range from the 60s to the 70s. Nighttime averages range from high 40s to high 60s. These temperatures mean that in San Diego a T-shirt and jeans is a suitable wardrobe choice any time of the year. Just add a sweater or jacket for the winter or cool summer evenings. San Diego style is like much of the state, California casual. Even though San Diego is a wealthy city and there are many upscale events and outings to attend that require formal wear, for the most part the city is one that is casual and laid back.

Pink singer

How to Dress Like Pink – The Singer

Pink singer

Since 2000 Pink has been putting out albums and rocking the music charts with her unique style of music. Her flair for music is almost as wild as her flare for dressing and when it comes to the way Pink dresses, there is never a dull moment. Her fiery attitude and self-reliant image makes her the envy of many women who would like to dress like her and be like her as well.

If you want to dress like Pink then you have to be ready to get a little bit crazy. On her most normal day of fashion Pink can be more outrageous than most on their wildest day. Here are some ways that you can achieve the Pink look:

•    Pants and shirt look: Pink often wears a combination of pants and a shirt when she performs on stage. Her pants consist of loose fitting cargo pants and her shirt is always one that shows her stomach. Her color combinations can vary greatly so here is your opportunity to have some fun. You can mix camouflage cargo pants with a black top or black cargo pants with a loud and colorful top, it’s really up to you and your mood. Footwear for this combination can consist of combat boots or high-top sneakers but leave the high heels in the closet. Accessorize the look with a number of flashy necklaces and be sure that you have on some bracelets too.
•    Dresses: Another way to pull off the Pink look is to wear one of her favorites; a dress. Pink likes to wear a wide variety of dresses but her favorite is the kind that is tighter on the top and widens out at the hips and get poofy. With these types of dresses there is almost always some pink in them perhaps to honor her name. She is also fond of the tighter fitting dresses in darker colors and always wears fishnet stalking to compliment the look. With the dresses you can feel free to pull out those wild high hells you have been saving and wear them to your heart’s content. Accessorize with sashes and belts if you like and wear some bracelets, earrings, and necklaces that grab attention as well.
•    Hats: No matter what type of Pink look you are going after you can add to it with a hat. Pink likes to wear a lot of different types of hats and can be spotted in derby hats and baseball hats too. Wear your baseball hat with the bill to the side to achieve the perfect look.
•    Hair and make-up: Pink typically wears her hair short and gives it a lot of attitude. You can do this by spiking your hair in certain places and simply messing it up in others and getting some firm holding gel to help you keep it in place makes the process a whole lot easier. A nice touch is to put some pink highlights in your hair as Pink does this quite often. For your make-up go heavy or light depending on your mood because Pink goes heavy at times and ultra light at others.

To complete the illusion, become a vegetarian and join PETA and you will all set.

•    Shoes: When it is all said and done you will probably walk a few miles while inside of Disneyland so you need to prepare your feet for that. Be sure you have on a comfortable pair of sneakers and be sure they are already broken in. A new pair of sneakers may look great on your feet but if you wear them for the first time while visiting Disneyland you will leave with much more that memories; you will leave with lots of blisters as well.
•    Shirts: T-shirts and tank tops are in tall order for Disneyland. Remember you will be moving around all day and anything that is thick is sure to be soaked with sweat before the day is done. If you feel the weather may get chilly you can bring a light sweater or a wind breaker with you and tie it around your waist. That way you will have it if you need it and it stays out of the way if you don’t.
•    Shorts: You will want to go with shorts even if it is a bit on the chilly side. With the constant movement from all the walking you will be doing your legs are not going to get a chance to get cold. If it is really cold then a lightweight pair of pants will do you better than jeans because you will still sweat and jeans are only going to absorb that sweat which will make for a sticky and uncomfortable day.
•    Accessories: Besides a camera and a couple memory sticks there are a few things you will want to bring with you. A hat can be a great way to keep the sun off your head and help shade your face. Be sure the hat is a lighter color as a darker color will only absorb the sun and make you feel hotter that you already are. Sunglasses with a high UV protection are a good idea too as you will be exposed to the sun for long periods of time. The most important thing to remember though is sun block. You will want to apply and reapply so that you don’t end your Disney trip looking like a lobster.

The last thing you will need to bring with you is lots of money. Disneyland is by no means inexpensive; but it sure is a lot of fun.

Bamboo

How To Care For Bamboo T-Shirts And Clothing

Bamboo

Bamboo clothing is taking the market by storm. This relatively new product, that has only been available for less than 10 years, is garnering a lot of excitement, especially from those who are concerned with the environment. The discovery of a way to turn bamboo into a yarn for clothing production means that there is now a new all-natural alternative to cotton. Like cotton, it is a breathable and natural fabric that is soft and comfortable to wear.

Caring for bamboo T-shirts and clothing is pretty straightforward.
•    You can machine wash and dry bamboo clothes on the gentle cycle. It is recommended that you remove them from the dryer as soon as the cycle is done. Some data suggests that bamboo can be fragile when wet, so care should be taken.
•    When washing, use mild detergent and no fabric softener, as harsh chemicals can damage bamboo.
•    For this same reason, never use chlorine bleach on bamboo.
•    Use cool or warm water when washing such items. Only items that have a higher blend of cotton in them should shrink. Shirts fabricated from only bamboo should not.

One of the major benefits of bamboo clothing is that the production of it has a much milder environmental impact than cotton or any other textile. Bamboo is like a grass and continues to grow without needing a period of replanting and waiting. It needs to be cut periodically, much like grass, and thrives from being cut back. Using the fibers from the bamboo plant to create textiles is a logical, natural step. Another plus is that bamboo fabric is naturally antibacterial.

If you care about the environmental impact of the production of the clothes you wear, switching to bamboo T-shirts and clothing is a great way to lessen your carbon footprint. There are multiple sources for finding great stylish clothes made of bamboo. If fact, you can even get custom-made bamboo T-shirts. You can order a bamboo tee in the color and style that you want and, like regular T-shirts, have anything you want printed on it.

You can use your new bamboo tee to educate those around you about the use of bamboo T-shirts and clothing. A good way to do this is to have tons of informational points about the use of bamboo clothing on a T-shirt. You can also simply put a clever phrase like “Got bamboo?” or “Do you bamboo?” on a T-shirt to bring attention to it. You can also just personalize your new bamboo T-shirt in any way you want. You can have a joke printed on it, a great photo, bragging rights or your cultural heritage. You can also have special event T-shirts made up for something you are organizing. Just remember to share with those who receive the T-shirts about what makes them different and how to care for them.

Get your very own custom-made bamboo T-shirt today and stand out from the crowd by the environmental impact that your clothes make.

Taylor Momsen

How to Dress Like Taylor Momsen

Taylor Momsen

One of the most popular new shows on television today is the show Gossip Girl. Of all the characters on the show, one of the more popular is Jenny Humphrey who is played by Taylor Momsen. At 16 years old she is quickly becoming one of the most envied young women on television today.  For this reason there are now many younger teens that want to look like her.

Momsen has a very contemporary look and is usually dressed to the nines no matter where she goes. Here are some different ways in which you too can look like this future diva:

•    Short dresses: Momsen like to wear a lot of short dresses. These dresses are on the loose fitting side and tend to even poof out just a bit. As far as coverage goes she tends to go with the ones that cover less rather than more. Be sure that you choose dresses that don’t go down any further than the top of your knees. When choosing your colors go light and bright and stick to yellows, beiges, and white.
•    Artistic look: Momsen often looks like a true artist when she is just out walking around. To accomplish this you need to go with darker colors and wear a typical artistic outfit like Momsen does. Start with a pair of dark tights and then wear a white shirt and top it all off with a black leather jacket. Don’t forget to wear the sunglasses that look like bug eyes with this look.
•    Accessories: You have a lot to choose from in this department as Momsen likes to accessorize her stuff. A favorite accessory of hers is a scarf and she makes it look great no matter what she has on. When picking out your scarves be sure that they contrast in color with whatever it is you are wearing. You can also go with any number of different purses to tie in an outfit as Momsen likes them all. As far as jewelry goes, Momsen likes to wear a good amount of colored bracelets, hanging necklaces, and earrings that hang somewhat low.
•    Hair and make-up: At times Momsen’s hair is prim and proper and to get this look you need only part to one side and use your body enhancing products sparingly. Still there are other times where the young star has a serious case of bed head, though it is always intentional. To get that bed head look just towel dry your hair before you go to sleep and in the morning you will be all set. When applying your make-up go with dark red coloring for your lips and be sure to use a lot of darker colors around your eyes. Plan on spending some time in front of the maker-up mirror as Momsen may be a teenager, but she wears enough make-up to pass for someone ten years older.

Pulling off this contemporary look isn’t always easy, but if done in the proper manner you will have more than one guy checking you out as you walk down the street.

Wool sweater

How to Wash a Wool Sweater

Wool sweater

When washing your delicate wool sweater you have to use the utmost of care to avoid the dreaded ‘fulling’ effect. Fulling is when there are patches of your nicely woven wool sweater that have been allowed to fluff up and look horrendous. This is easily avoided and contrary to popular belief, this is really caused by abrasion and not water temperature.

Follow this process to ensure your wool sweater comes out as good as new:

•    Preparation for wash: Fill your bath tub with hot water…yes hot. Again, this is not the cause of fulling, it is abrasion that causes this. Hot water has the power to dissolve grease and other grime so don’t be afraid of it, use it.
•    Soap: Soap will hurt the sweater, even the most supposed ‘gentle’ soaps available. Woolite is not as gentle as they say but is definitely better than regular washing machine soap. Even better though is good old detergent. The best brand to use is Dawn. Stay away from the colored and fruity fragrances and stick with original blue or yellow if blue is not available. Use one squirt in the tub of hot water and only give a quick swish to dispense the soap, but avoid sudding up the water.
•    Washing: Here is where you have to have discipline. Gently place your wool sweater in the hot water with Dawn and let it be. Don’t swirl it, mash it, or ring it as that is abrasion and a sure path to fulling. Let the Dawn do its job by letting the wool sweater just soak. Soak it for several hours and overnight if it has been a while since the garment has been cleaned.
•    Rinsing: Once the sweater has soaked for a while, gently transfer it onto some clean towels and be sure it doesn’t bunch up. Now empty the tub and re-fill it with fresh hot water. Then gently take the sweater and place it in the clean water and let it sit for about 20 minutes. You may have to repeat this step two or three times; basically until the water looks clear.
•    Drying: Get some towels! Gently lay the sweater down on a big towel and then carefully roll the towel and press the towel to assist in the drying. Make sure to use pressure only and do not rub or shift your motion as this will cause fulling. Once the sweater is only damp, place it on dry towels and let it sit being sure to flip it every 12 hours or so. The air will do the rest and in about 24 to 48 hours your wool sweater should be dry.

If this all sounds like it is too much or your wool sweater has a significant stain on it, consult a dry cleaner that is better able to handle you sweater and will have access to chemicals that you can’t get. Just remember that when it comes to your wool sweater, patience is your friend and abrasion is your mortal enemy.

Strawberry stains

How to Remove Strawberry Stains from Clothes

Strawberry stains

One of the tastiest fruits known to man is the timeless classic known as the strawberry. The strawberry is used in many different desserts but can be enjoyed equally as well on their own. The best is getting a really ripe strawberry that latterly burst with flavor as soon as it hits your mouth. Unfortunately these strawberries also usually burst all over your clothes as well leaving a very nasty stain. These stains are some of the hardest stains you will ever have to deal with.

You can try to use the stain removers you buy at the store but they will have little to no effect on these tough stains. But don’t throw your garments away until you try the following steps to remove the strawberry stain:

•    Rinse and blot: As soon as you realize your clothing has been stained you need to run those stains under cold water for about five minutes. Then get a paper towel and blot at the stain. This will help to remove some of the stain right away and makes the removal of the rest of the stain easier on you. Be sure you are blotting and not rubbing as rubbing will simply make the stain worse.
•    Soak the stain: In a bucket of cold water and regular laundry detergent soak your garment for a while. You don’t need to soak the garment for very long, but a couple of hours certainly won’t hurt. Once the time is up take it out of the solution and wring it out.
•    Make a magic mix: Take this time to make a wonderful and easy mixture that will almost always remove the strawberry stain. To create this concoction you mix baking powder with white vinegar and mix it into a loose paste, it’s that simple.
•    Treat the stain: Next take the stained garment and spread some of the magic paste over the stain. Let this sit on the stain for twenty minutes or more and remember, no rubbing.
•    Rinse the stain again: After the twenty minutes has elapsed rinse once again with cold water.
•    Wash the stain: Now wash the garment in your washing machine using the cold water cycle. Do not throw it in the clothes dryer when the washer is finished.
•    Dry the garment: Let the garment air dry to be sure that the strawberry stain is completely gone. If you dry the garment in the clothes dryer and the stain is still there, you will set the stain in and then you may as well just toss it in the trash.
•    Repeat if needed: If the stain remains you may have to repeat the process. Strawberry stains are among the more stubborn stains in the stain family so expect to give it an application or two for best results.

Now just enjoy your strawberry eating and don’t worry about the stains that will come. After all, it is probably easier to deal with these occasional stains than it is to give up strawberries as part of your diet.

Rachel Green

How to Dress Like Rachel Green

Rachel Green

Rachel Green was a character on the fictional TV show, Friends. Friends was one of the most popular sitcoms in TV history and Rachel was one of the most popular characters on the show. Played by actress Jennifer Aniston, Rachel came from a privileged background but had to learn to live on her own and support herself in New York. Rachel starts out as a ditzy self-absorbed daddy’s girl but evolves into a savvy fashion buyer who is a loyal and loving friend with complex relationships.

Aside from being stylish on her own, the character Rachel Green also works for the designer Ralph Lauren, which makes it possible, and necessary, for her to have a sophisticated and somewhat trendy look. Though not everyone can work for a designer and have access to high end clothes, with a little creativity it’s possible to have Rachel Green’s look and style.

The “Rachel” was one of the most popular hair styles in the 90’s. Women across the country wanted to duplicate Rachel Green’s hair. To get her look, try to style your hair with volume on top, parted in the middle and worn straight, framing your face. If you have short hair, a wig from a wig or costume shop can help you get the look of Rachel’s hair.

Another way to get the Rachel Green look is with trendy stylish clothes that were popular in the 90’s. From lingerie under cardigans to pencil skirts with tights, Rachel wore outfits that fit her body and made her look comfortable and edgy at the same time. Vests over t-shirts and short skirts with boots is another example of Rachel’s look. Jeans with vintage t-shirts is something you can also wear to have her style. Body hugging tank tops with dark wash jeans were also a staple in her wardrobe and something you can easily find to get her look. In all of your choices, keep the color palette simple and earthy, including gray, taupe, and black that were very popular for her character.

For going out, Rachel would wear a variety of little dresses. From a classic little black dress to a sequined dress, this is something that you can find at most women’s boutiques that would help you style yourself like Rachel Green. And with the dresses, don’t be afraid to wear really high heels. Rachel never met a pump she didn’t like!

Finally, when Rachel was pregnant, she wore lots of designer maternity wear. You can get this look by shopping for classic tailored maternity pieces at discount maternity stores. Pair sophisticated tops with comfortable classic pants and skirts and you can look like pregnant Rachel.

The character of Rachel Green became a style icon in real life fashion. Her streamlined classic look can be achieved by combining classic pieces that you can find at many department stores. Pull them together and you too can look like Rachel Green!

Wedges

What to Wear with Wedges

Wedges

Wedges are an extremely popular shoe style, but not everyone knows just what makes a wedge a true wedge. Before you go shopping for one of this season’s hot shoe trends, let’s do a bit of research. On most shoes, the heel of the shoe extends from the heel of the foot to the ground. Wedges are designed differently. A wedge heel extends under the foot, from the back of the shoe to the middle or front, and provides total foot support.

Wedges can vary in height. Many are high-heeled, giving them the familiar triangular “wedge” shape. When the front of a wedge is also elevated, it is called a “platform wedge.” High heeled wedges tend to be easier to walk in than stiletto heels while still offering lots of height to those who are vertically challenged! Not all wedges are high heels, however. It’s the shape and length of the heel that determines if a shoe is a wedge or not. This shoe style is wonderfully versatile and comes in a rainbow of designs and heights, making it adaptable to most any outfit, from dressy to casual.

Wedges add instant cosmopolitan flair, so be sure you’re ready to up your fashion quotient before slipping on a pair. They work best with certain outfits, depending on the look you’re going for.

Jeans. Wedges add a cute, fresh look to jeans. If you want to go casual with your favorite jeans and a tee or tank, try a pair of canvas wedges. They’ll not only be a great alternative to sneakers, high heeled wedges will add instant length to your legs. And for the best of both worlds, try a pair of sneaker wedges! For a dressier ensemble, wear your jeans with a pretty silk top (or other flowing fabric), then add coordinating wedges in leather or with embellishments. Because their unique design gives wedges a very sophisticated and sexy edge, they are a great choice for a night out on the town.

Skirts. Wedges are a perfect complement to skirts because they offer a more casual look than the traditional high heel. For a balanced look, wear wedges with a flowing skirt rather than a tight pencil skirt. Because of their size, wedges tend to make your feet look clunky when paired with slim skirts, so definitely stick with a loosely fitting skirt. There are wedge styles with straps that wrap up the leg, adding even more interest and sex appeal to an outfit.

Pants and capris. Pants and capri pants go nicely with wedges. But remember what we discussed when wearing skirts with wedges: wedges add visual weight to the foot area, so go with a wide-legged pant or capri to pull this look off. Don’t pair wedges with tight pants or capris or they’ll end up making you look like you’re standing on concrete blocks.

If you’re dressing for a formal event, wedges probably are not the best shoe choice. They tend to send out a fun, flirty casual vibe. In these cases, a stiletto heel would be the better match for your gown or party dress.

Cashmere

How to Care for Cashmere

Cashmere

Is there anything softer or cozier to wear than cashmere? A sweater that is made of this ultra soft material is great to have, but there are many people who will avoid buying anything made of cashmere because they think it will be too hard to care for. While caring for cashmere does certainly take more time and patience versus other materials, it doesn’t have to be a major chore and it is anything but impossible.

Though almost any article of clothing that is made of cashmere is likely to say dry-clean only, you can effectively wash your own cashmere clothing and it really isn’t as hard as you might think. Here are steps to properly wash and care for cashmere:

1.    Prepare the water: Anything that you have that is cashmere should be washed by hand and the perfect place to do this is the sink or bath tub. Begin by filling the sink or tube with warm, not hot, water and then add some gentle detergent. Swish the detergent around gently with your hand and try to avoid the soap sudding up too much.
2.    Wash the cashmere: Now, one article at a time, place the cashmere clothing into the warm water mix and gentle swirl the clothing around. Do not agitate or wring the clothing while in the water as this may cause lots of unwanted harm to come to the clothing. You can now let the clothing sit for a couple of hours.
3.    Prepare the rinse: Once the clothing has been sitting in the water mixture for a little while you can lay out some fluffy towels and empty the sink or tub. Again, do not wring the clothes out. Once the tub or sink is empty fill it back up with warm water only and place the clothing back in the water. Do not swish this time but just let the clothing sit. After a while you will see remnants of soap and you will then know it is time to put the clothing back on the towel and empty the water once again. Most articles of clothing will require at least two rinse sessions but you will know they are ready to be completely dry when the water contains no more soap residue.
4.    Dry: Now that the washing is done, all that is left is to dry the cashmere garment. Lay out regular clean towels and place the clothing on top. Then roll the towel and gently press downward on the towel to help absorb the water. Repeat this a couple of times with different towels and end by laying the clothing on another fluffy towel. From here, the air will finish the job. Never hang the clothing to dry because the weight of the wet cashmere will almost certainly cause stretching to occur.

If this all seems too much for you then you can always take the garments to a dry cleaner and have them clean them for you. Whatever you decide to do, don’t try to get tricky and use your washing machine and dryer to get the job done. All that will leave you with is a clean article of clothing that you can no longer wear.
