How to Dress Like Jack Sparrow

The Pirates of the Caribbean movies really put Jonny Depp on the map as a marquee actor. What’s more is that it ushered in a whole new style in fashion. Call it the “pirate fashion” or the “Jack Sparrow fashion” but if you want to achieve the look you have to be particular in what you wear.

It should be noted that the look of Jack Sparrow turned out totally different than what the writers envisioned. The original design for Jack Sparrow was a much more dumbed-down version than the version you saw on the movie screen. Once Johnny Depp was hired to play Sparrow he brought on a whole host of changes that really spiced up the outfit.

Starting at the head you will need to get a red bandana. Don’t use a bandana with paisleys or any other design, stick to a solid red one. If you really want to go for the look all the way then you have to get yourself a tricone which is the signature three cornered leather hat worn by Sparrow in the movie.

Your shirt should consist of a white silk shirt with puffy sleeves. Make sure that at least the top four buttons are undone and do not button the cufflinks. Your coat should be a lightweight silk tweed frock coat and needs to be light brown in color. While wearing the coat never button it up, always leave it open.

As for your mid-section you will need a rather thick belt with an outrageously big buckle. Depp later wore two belts but one will suffice if you don’t want two. Next a nice pink silk sash needs to be worn. Simply tie it around your waist and let it hang off to one side.

The pants can be any type of trouser that is light brown in color. If you wish a pair of corduroys will do the trick. Just be sure that the color of the pants is one shade lighter than the thigh high suede boots –folded down- that you will also need to wear.

As far as accessories goes you can get a satchel and have the strap go diagonally across you chest and hang it off your side. Old looking guns and swords are a nice touch too.

If you really want to commit to the style, you will need earrings, several rings, and trinkets for your hair –if your hair is long enough.- Dark makeup around your eyes is also part of the look. Jack Sparrow had several gold teeth but that is not a necessity for the fashion. Finish it off with a scruff face and a long goatee with two braids.

If you go to these lengths it will hard for anyone to distinguish you from the real Jack Sparrow. Now all you will need to do is talk like you are drunk or do what Depp did for the movie and mimic the voice and movements of Rolling Stones guitar player Keith Richards and the illusion will be complete. Now you will be living the Jack Sparrow fashion.

Now, you may be thinking to yourself, isn’t dressing like a hillbilly basically the same as dressing like a red neck. The answer, and it may surprise you, is not really. You see a hillbilly is, typically, considered not all that intelligent and rather, well, how to put this nicely, slovenly in their appearance.

To dress like a hillbilly you must consider the hillbilly in its natural environment. Picture a house whose screen door is only resting on the doorframe, a yard full of old stuff and a pickup truck, rusted, sitting on cinderblocks. The woman is standing out front with a baby on her hip and the man is chewing tobacco with a shotgun resting on his hip as he spits tobacco on the ground.

Ok, now that you have the mental picture in your head, let’s get onto the art of dressing like a hillbilly. Remember, hillbillies are people who have led, hard lives and look, on average, ten years older than they actually are. Over all hillbilly fashion is surprisingly simple:

1)    Clothing – You want old, one or two sizes too big for you overalls that are stained or look like they get washed once a week. Flannel shirts under the overalls or a worn out looking t-shirt complete the clothing ensemble. For the women, overalls are good but really beat up jeans rolled halfway up your calves is a much better look.
2)    Baseball caps – The cap should be a solid color, black or red, and have a logo on them about sports, beer, farming equipment, women, liquor, fishing or hunting. Make sure the front of the cap is good and curved. Use a baseball to get the look right. Just take the ball, wrap the bill of the cap around it and shove it through the opening in the back of the cap. Make sure the bill is a little wet first.
3)    Hairstyle – As for hairstyles I have two suggestions: Men – mullet, seriously. Women – 80’s hair, or dirty and straight with a part in the middle.
4)    Shoes – Your shoes should be work boots and look like you’ve worn them everyday for the past 5 years. Women: barefoot.

That’s the fashion part of it, like I said, surprisingly simple. However, it’s not enough to look like a hillbilly; you have to act like one to really pull it off. Hillbillies are not known for their incredible posture, skill at intelligent conversation or cleanliness.  So no funny or witty anecdotes or you will completely blow your look.

Lastly, look older than you are. As I said above, hillbillies live hard lives and age faster than other people. You need to bring that look out, as well so, making your eyes look sunken is a plus. Men, grow a scraggly beard and don’t trim it very well. Ladies you have to let your hair get dirty and oily and stop conditioning it.

Remember, you have to look like you’re someone who thinks a computer is a magic box that scares you.

Black Tights

One of her most signature pieces were her always-present black tights. The tights were such a part of her look that it became what she was best known for. Luckily, her signature black tights are easy to find. She wore opaque black tights much of the time, but she also wore sheer black tights. She wore them so often that she created a fad for them in the 60’s and was sometimes called “The Girl in the Black Tights.” Pair anything at all with black tights and you’re channeling her look.

Black and White

Much of her look centered on combinations of black and white. The look was about blocks of color as well as stripes, and usually everything was black, white or both. She was a dancer who loved to wear her leotards on the street after dance practice. She often wore black leotard tops with black or black and white miniskirts and her black tights.

Skirts

When dressing for college, there are many factors to consider. The main factor for many college students is staying comfortable while still expressing their own personal style. The comfort factor leads most college campuses to be populated mainly by students who dress very casually.

Jeans

Because another main point of dressing for a college campus is to express your own individuality, there are no rules at all about what type of jeans to wear. Some students love the punk or grunge look of torn-up jeans. Others want a more put-together look with pressed jeans or dark jeans that are in excellent condition. Still others prefer a retro look to go with their retro style. Retro jeans are often stonewashed or a very light blue color.

T-Shirts

At college, most students do wear t-shirts regularly. T-shirts are very versatile and they can give students very different looks depending on the type of t-shirts they are and how they are worn. Someone very fashion conscious can choose a patterned t-shirt or a solid color shirt that goes well with the rest of their outfit. The 1910s were difficult times. In fact, the difficult weren’t unique to the United States. People all over the world acknowledged the 1910s as being one of the worst decades they’d ever seen.

It could have been a number of things. But it’s a safe bet that the cause for the universal hardship was the Great War. The First World War changed the United States and the world forever. It was the largest conflict to ever take place and it took it a toll on the global morale.
For years, fashion was about abundance. Women wore floor length skirts with elaborate hats and gloves. Men wore three piece suits and hats as every day wear. Fashion was intended to make people look fabulous. But when the First World War began in 1914, things changed.

People started to think more practically about how they lived. The idea of opulence completely left the culture and the world of fashion. People began to dress in clothing that required less material and less frills. People began to cut corners and costs any way they could and clothing was no exception.

The beginning of the 1910 was about looking fabulous. By the end of the 1910s, women’s dresses were shortened from floor length to above the ankles. Colors and designs were bland with less flair and fancy. Even menswear took a nose dive. Pants were made shorter and clothing became simpler. After all, there was a war going on. People didn’t have time to worry about how they looked. They were too busy worrying about how to survive this war to end all wars.

Unfortunately, the First World War didn’t end wars. In fact, it didn’t even come close. But the changes made to the fashion world lasted beyond the four year conflict. Floor length dresses have hardly been worn since the early 1910 except in formal attire. Clear distinctions between practical casual wear and opulent formal wear were made.

However, dressing like you’re from the 1910s could be a little tricky in the modern world. You might not actually be able to wear a 1915 costume without getting a few stares. You can design your wardrobe with the minimalist 1910s mentality.

Rich people have no clue how a normal, everyday person dresses or even where they get their clothes. Normal people don’t have personal shoppers or even much help at the store when buying their clothes. If you want to dress like a rich person, here are some tips and advice to help make everyone think you’ve got money coming out of your, well, ears.

Before we get into that, one thing you must understand, rich people do not, in any way, consider the full life value of a piece of clothing. While you and I may look at a pair of jeans we’ve had for 5 or 6 years and think, “Yay comfy.” A rich person looks at an article of clothing that is 2 weeks old and says, “Eww, that old thing?”

This means you have to think expensive looking, brand new looking, never been worn before looking or you won’t pull it off at all. With that said, here’s how you do it:

1)    You need a few pieces of high quality clothing that looks brand new. To do this, go to department store and look for sales, clearance items and surplus clothing stores. You’ll need at least 2 or 3 shirts or blouses, 2 pairs of pants and a couple pairs of shoes.
2)    When buying your clothing avoid polyester like it’s got the plague! Look for silk, cotton, wool, linen, angora and cashmere.
3)    Accessorize like there’s no tomorrow. You can take the same two outfits and with proper accessories make a lot more looks that work. Some things to get are sunglasses, rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, watches and handbags, for the lady that is. Gents, you need watches, rings, sunglasses and cuffs. Look for stylish but be less concerned about materials. A fake pearl necklace in darker light looks just as good as a real one.
4)    They say shoes make the man, or woman and in this case it is so very true. The shoes you choose much be quality footwear and made from either leather or something of equal quality, Women, when choosing your shoes think of your outfit, they must go together.
5)    Your appearance hinges not only on your clothing but also on your personal grooming habits. For the men you have to keep your hair cut and styled and if you choose to grow facial hair, it must be neat, groomed and have clean lines to it. For the women, your hairstyle has to compliment your facial features. A manicure, white even teeth and good skin care is a must as well for men and women.

Lastly, to really complete that rich person look, you need to be in shape. Rich people have personal trainers, who drive them to work out and eat healthy, well most of them do. Whether you think is politically correct or not, the healthier you look the richer you look especially once you get all the clothing and grooming completed. Stick with those tips and you’ll have everyone thinking you got money coming out of your ears, too.

In 1978 the cult classic musical movie Grease came out. Still today you can go to any Karaoke Bar and be “treated” to a number of people attempting the duets made famous by Olivia Newton John and John Travolta in the movie. Travolta’s character in the movie was Danny Zuko, a teenage kid in a “gang” called the T-Birds who did little more than hang out after school and work on hot rods. Zuko is what is known as a “greaser” and his look is classic and easily achieved.

In the movie Grease, Travolta brought the Danny Zuko character to life with a very simple wardrobe. With the exception of a couple of scenes in the movie, Travolta always dressed in the typical greaser fashion.

Begin with the shirt. All the greasers including Travolta wore only white t-shirts. The t-shirts were just a regular undershirt –crew cut- and were trademarked with a pack of cigarettes rolled up in the sleeve. If you don’t smoke you can accomplish the same look with a deck of cards. The shirt should be a little loose, but not to the point where it puffs up around you. Oddly enough, Travolta always tucked in his T-shirt in the movie.

The jeans worn by Travolta were either a dark blue or black color with the occasional lighter blue. Make sure you get jeans that fit snug, but don’t go crazy and wear skinny jeans. The jeans should be longer than you would normally wear so that you can role the bottoms several times in a flip motion. The role should be about two inches high. The belt that is worn should have a non-flashy buckle and be black in color.

Wear white socks and a pair of black shoes. The shoes should not be too dressy but not too casual either. A pair of Sketcher-type shoes will suffice. Make sure that the shoes are lace-up shoes and not slip-ons.

Most importantly to achieve the look you will need a good leather jacket. The jacket has to be black and should not be long in length. Avoid fancy leather jackets that have all kinds of buckles and zippers and keep the style of the jacket very plain. You can take the fashion all the way by getting “T-Birds” embroidered on the back of your leather jacket if you wish. Whatever you do, never zip up the jacket in any capacity as this was a greaser no-no for Travolta’s character.

Now that you have the style down the rest is a breeze. Simply get a can of “grease” and slick back your hair. Bring a comb with you as a true greaser always combs his hair every chance he gets. You also need to get a pair of dark sunglasses to wear.

Don’t forget the bad boy walk and the cheesy Italian New York accent. Why the accent is one of New York is a mystery as the film was supposed to be taking place in California. Now you can go out and live the greaser way with your new “Travolta fashion” and proudly proclaim, “Grease is the word.”

Hippies were all about peace and love in the 1970s. They were fun-loving, war-hating, drug dealing sweethearts that eventually became CEOs of the major corporations that they despised. Somewhere in the magic of the 70s, hippies developed their own brand of fashion. It was a convenience, easy style that still inspires two generations later.

If you weren’t around in the 70s, you may only be relying on old photos, television, or other people’s memories to understand hippie fashion. Comfort was the primary emphasis for hippie fashion. They weren’t interested in very structured looks. Their clothing and appearance was very free-flowing and open. Of course, hippies were also counter-culture. They sought to do what was different from mainstream society. Hippies would never have worn a suit and tie. They would never cut their hair. They were peaceful, but dogmatic rebels.

Hippie men always wore beards. As mentioned previously, they never cut their hair. Most hippies sported long, straight hair that fell below their shoulders. Hair was never dyed. If you are looking to create a temporary hippie look, and cannot wait the months or years it will take to grow a beard and long hair, you should buy a wig or glue on beard. Most hippies wore holes in jeans, sandals, and everything else. Iron on patches onto your jeans. Hippies wore patches like peace signs and butterflies. Women also wear bell bottom jeans with ironed on patches. If you want to look more feminine, wear a long, flowing dress, or a peasant skirt. Hippie women loved bohemian clothes, especially the peasant blouses and skirts with printed designs on them. Sometimes, hippies wore mini-skirts or mini-dresses.

Hippie women looked similar to men with long, straight hair. They would add freshly picked flowers to their hair. Some hippie women would take several daisies, or similar flowers, are string them together, creating a band. They would then wear the flower band around their hair. Fabric head bands were also popular, along with head scarves.

Both men and women wore tie dye t-shirts. It was economic, easy to create, and always individual. Hippies always wore sandals or flip flops whenever possible, and in the winter, they wore boots. Women wore boots also, with their dresses. Women never wore high heels. Make sure you wear the flattest shoes possible to carry off this look. Always get into the easy-going spirit whenever you dress like a hippie, because that’s the most important part of the equation.

Here’s how you do it, and just a note, this works on skinny people and is hard to pull off if you are really overweight and that’s not being mean, it’s just the way this style works:

1)    The first thing to learn is that anything goes with anything. The only rule is that you are not a slave to current trends or fashion magazines. You make the fashion you like and who cares if anyone likes as long as you do.
2)    This style, or anti-style should leave you looking mismatched yet, strangely adorable.
3)    Jeans should be tight fitting and of almost any color you can think of other than light blue. Black, neon or dark wash colors are perfect.
4)    Your shoes should be motorcycle boots, vintage heels, ballet flats or the always classis black and white check Converse.
5)    The shirt should go almost the opposite direction of the pants. You want something that has a little more flow to it and is a bit longer than usual. We aren’t talking down to your knees here, but past the waist is a good call. Men’s shirts work great for this look if you are a woman.
6)    If you don’t feel like doing jeans, leggings are another great way to go. Couple it with a short, tight fitting skirt that has an interesting pattern at the bottom. Wearing big boots caps off the look perfectly.

To dress like a redneck one must think like a redneck. How does a redneck think you ask? It’s rather simple and you need only consider three things, comfort, flannel and old. Redneck fashion is all bout functionality between work and home. Here are some tips so you can get your redneck look from top to bottom:

1)    Baseball caps – You need a solid color cap, red or black are the norm and it has to have either a logo on it that relates to sports, beer, tools, women, hunting or fishing. A new cap is a no go; it needs to be old or worn looking.
2)    T-shirts – T-shirts need to be worn and have to have something on them that supports a farming company, truck parts or something about being a redneck. When looking for a motif you should think along the same lines as the logos for the baseball cap.
3)    Flannel – It’s all about the flannel. Specifically red and black flannel because anything else is just not manly enough for a redneck. The shirt should look old and worn out and the thinner looking it is the better. If it’s summer time, cut those sleeves off and make sure it’s not a neat and tidy cut either.
4)    Belt Buckle – Your belt should sport a rather larger buckle; normally silver in color and the buckle should be related to something along the lines of the logos for the baseball cap. They don’t have to match; in fact, it’s better if they don’t.

Are you a girl? Do you want to look like you’re just one of the guys so you can hang out and keep it simple? If this is true, then you want to dress like a tomboy. Here are some tips on how to achieve that look easily.

You’ll need to ditch all the girly clothes and leave them alone. Get yourself some sneakers, Nike, Vans, or Chucks are good and boots are also a good choice just not girly boots, we are talking Doc Marten or work boots here.

You will want some jeans that are comfortable, not low riders, or if it’s summertime, basketball shorts, cargo shorts or just regular old shorts that come down to your knees. Boys don’t wear short shorts, remember that and always avoid skirts of any kind.

When looking at shirts, you will need some t-shirts that are loose fitting and, generally plain looking. You can also throw a button down shirt over it that is also plain and be sure to roll up the sleeves. In the fall, flannel is a great choice for that. Last but not least, top it all off with a baseball cap of some kind.

When dressing like a Tomboy, you can’t just look like one you have to act like a boy. Do things like play video games, get into some sports, and be a bit more physical than a normal girl may be. Remember, Tomboy’s aren’t afraid to mix it up with the boys in football and things like that.

How you talk is also important. Things like “oh my gawd” and “oh no he didn’t” are not things that boys say, ever. Boys say things like “dude”, “man” and “awesome”; you can even combine these into, “dude, awesome!” Remember, girls and boys talk very differently and as for gossip, boys don’t really do it that much.

Yes, you can still have female friends just be sure not to dress like them or act like them otherwise your friends that are boys will start to avoid you. If for a reason you are in a situation where you have to wear dress, make sure it’s not overly girly at all and generally darker in color.

Boys are typically considered to be technology freaks, if you can plug it in, turn it on or have to update it from time to time they love it. This does not really apply to cell phones for some reason. Boys are not on their cell phone all the time texting their friends about everything that is happening.

Remember, boys are all about the immediate what’s going on now. They don’t put too much stock in what is happening tomorrow or the day before. They are generally about what they are currently doing so get into that mindset. They don’t gossip, they brag and they make fun of each other constantly and forget it two seconds later.

Last note, boy’s watch shows on TV like Family Guy, Robot Chicken and anime. They do not watch 90210, Gossip Girl or anything girlie like that. You shouldn’t either. Before you know it you will be just one of the guys.

The television show 24 is one of the most popular TV series on right now. The main character, Jack Bauer, is played by actor Kiefer Sutherland. When it comes to fashion Jack Bauer is a pretty cut and dry guy. But that’s what makes dressing like him so much fun; because it is easily achieved.

If you are simply going to be casual most of the time you are in luck. Jack Bauer’s casual look rarely consists of anything more than a pair of regular fit jeans and a comfort-fit long or short sleeve t-shirt topped off with a dark colored lightweight jacket.

The shirts he wears are usually lighter brown and cream colors when worn with the jacket which is a dark brown color. If he is wearing just a shirt the colors tend to be on the darker side. His dress shirts are typically darker grays while his dress pants and sports blazer are usually charcoal or black in color.

Jack Bauer’s shoes will of course vary from situation to situation but they are always black in color. If you really want to complete the look you will need a black lightweight bullet proof vest worn over your shirt, but under your jacket.
