Dark complexion

Best Colors for Dark Complexions – What to Wear and What not to Wear

Dark complexion

When it comes to what color of clothing you should wear you should always consider your complexion. If you have a dark complexion you are in luck as there are full spectrums of colors that will look good on you. There is however no one size fits all rule as there are different levels of what would be considered a ‘dark complexion.’ While the best outfit to wear is always the one you get the most compliments in there are some general guidelines that can help you to determine what to wear and what not to wear with your darker complexion.

If you have a dark complexion there are basically three categories that you will fall in. Determining which category you fall under will help you determine what types of colors are going to look best on you. Here is a quick guide:

1.    Cool Toned: A cool toned individual will have a much darker complexion that the any other type. When you are cool toned, you will find that colors such as red, pink ,blue, and lavender look great with your complexion. On the other side of the fence, you will find that colors such as yellow and orange do not. Cool toned individuals usually find comfort and style with the many different shades of red as well as blues, purple, and maroon.

2.    Warm Toned: A warm toned individual will have a lighter skin complexion in comparison to a cool toned individual but will still have an overall dark complexion. When you are warm toned, you will look great in orange, yellow, and even apricot colors, but you will not look particularly good in the colors that the cool toned individuals look good in. Being warm toned you will want to avoid the darker colors like reds, blues, and even maroon. Choosing earthy colors is usually a safe bet. Colors such as gold, brown, green, orange, and apricot usually fit the bill.

3.    Mixed Tones: This type of skin complexion is both unique and harder to determine which color of clothing looks best with it. The reason is that if you are a mixed tone your complexion will tend to change somewhat throughout the year. You may be one tone in the summer and a totally different tone in the winter. Because of this you can wear all the colors that look good with cool toned and warm toned individuals, you just have to take more care as to what your current tone is before you get dressed. Mixed toned individuals are generally on the warmer toned side but if you can tell when you have a sun burn or people can see you blush, then this describes you.

Whatever color you decide to wear with your dark complexion you should be comfortable in it. It is after all your body you are dressing up. But there is no reason why you can’t feel great and look your best and let some of the colors of the rainbow help you out. Being a darker complexion can be challenging when it comes to deciding what to wear, but knowing your tone ahead of time may help you to decide just a bit easier.

Larry the cable guy

How to Dress Like Larry the Cable Guy

Larry the cable guy

For years now he has captured the hearts of Americans everywhere with his catch phrase, ‘Git er done.’ Larry the Cable Guy has made a career out of dressing and acting like a stereotypical man from the south, or what he likes to call a ‘redneck.’ His style is definitely not hard to replicate and what’s so great about it is that there are so many men that can easily relate to Larry because he is just a regular looking guy.

Larry the Cable Guy’s ensemble never changes and here is what you need to achieve his look:

•    Shirt: Get a red and black flannel shirt and cut off the sleeves at the shoulders. This is Larry’s signature top and he is seen in it everywhere he goes. Make sure not to wear an undershirt as Larry never does, and make sure that the flannel is one size too small. This adds to the ‘redneck’ effect as it not only looks tighter, but will often expose part of your belly and if you have a ‘beer belly’ like Larry, then it adds to the shock value.

•    Jeans: Blue jeans are an absolute must with this look. Don’t go loose fit or boot cut and by all means stay far, far away from skinny jeans. Choose a pair of jeans that are tight but that will allow you to move. Larry always seems to stuff himself into jeans that may not be the loosest on him.

•    Belt: A black belt does the trick here but don’t forget the belt buckle. The belt buckle should be very big and very gaudy. A great place to pick one of these hilarious belt buckles up is at a highway truck stop. When it comes to your belt buckle, the bigger, the better.

•    Shoes:
Larry is always in work boots that are a dark tan color. These can be found at any department store. When you put them on, don’t worry about your jeans covering the boots, rather just let the jeans bunch up, that’s what Larry does.

•    Cap:
Don’t just grab any old baseball cap and call it a day here. You need to get a trucker cap or one that looks like it. The front half of the cap should be made of a bad polyester material and the back half of the cap should be mess. When you find the perfect cap, don’t forget to form the bill so that the sides are pointing straight down. The result should be a bill that is more squared off rather than rounded off.

•    Accessories:
A wallet with a chain works great with this look and you can finish off the look with a can of dipping tobacco in your back pocket and a pack of cigarettes in your front flannel pocket and the look is complete. If you don’t smoke or dip, don’t worry as it is not known for sure if Larry does either. It just adds to the image.

Now practice your southern accent and holler, ‘Git er done,’ every chance you get and your transformation into Larry the Cable Guy will be a big success.

1940s

How to Dress Like You Are From the 1940s

1940s

Without a doubt, the 1940s were dark times. The Second World War occupied the first half of the decade and this had a huge impact on everything from food to work to fashion. Everything was rationed, even clothing. In fact utility clothing and very little change in fashion dominated the first half of the decade due to the focus on the war efforts. Needless to say, there are lots of things about the 1940s that make it a unique decade. However at mid-decade the war ended, and things improved greatly after that. The clothing rationing ended and fashion once again came to life.

One thing that kept heads above water was the great fashions of the 1940s. There is no doubt that the 1940s were one of the greatest decades for fashion. All you need to do is look around and see that the styles from the era are still influential and popular today. It’s one of the greatest times in American fashion and people still love to dress in a way that pays homage to this bygone time.

In fact, all you need to do to dress like you’re from the 1940s is look at what you already have. Most of the clothes you have in your closet will have some trace of a 1940s influence. Modifying your own clothing to make it look more like the traditional 1940s style is a cost-effective way to get the look you desire. Here are some things to keep in mind if you are looking to create a 1940s look to your wardrobe.

•    Keep all skirts below the knee. Mini-skirts were not yet invented and modesty was highly valued. Women dressed like ladies and behaved like ladies.

•    Matching skirts and fitted jackets were a hot look from this era and one that looks good on practically all women.

•    High necked blouses were typical of the style of the day. Bows, frills and feminine ties often adorned necklines.

•    Hats were a very important fashion item. Women wore them often and had a variety to choose from.

•    Other accessories were equally important to pull together a finished look. Purses and gloves were the most common accessories. Jewelry was also used by increasing numbers of women. Scarves were often worn around the hair.

•    Ankle socks were often seen during this decade because stockings were in short supply.

•    High heels and wedge heels were a necessity for well-dressed ladies also.

•    For men, trousers, shirts and ties are typical of this era. Suits were worn quite a lot. Sweater vests with a V-neck were also a fashion statement of the day. In the late 40s Hawaiian shirts broke onto the fashion scene for men, creating a look that was very different than anything men had worn prior.

Dressing like you’re from the 40’s is a matter of a little research and mixing and matching things that you already have at home with some other items exclusive to that era. You can pull together a unique and fantastic 40s look in no time.

Martha Stewart is one of the most successful business women to ever walk the face of the earth. She began by teaching others how to cook and has since turned out her own line of cookware, collaborated on many fashion designs for the home, and started Living Omnimedia. Additionally she has a syndicated talk show and continues to come up with many different ways to bring in the bucks. Because she is so successful and talented she is revered by women everywhere. Not only do these women want to learn to cook and decorate like her, but many of them want to dress like her as well.

Martha Stewart has a very simple and down to earth style which makes it very easy to copy. Here are some ways for you too to dress like Martha Stewart:

•    Tops: Stewart tends to stick with tops that are long sleeved. When choosing your tops you can go with sweaters, button downs, or anything else that is long sleeved, elegant looking, and comfortable to wear. Go with whatever color you feel suits you the best as Stewart really has no favorites and has worn every color under the rainbow and then some. If you do decide to go with a short sleeved shirt, make sure you wear a button up sweater or a nice jacket to accentuate the shirt.
•    Pants: Stewart likes to wear dress pants and the color of the pants is all going to depend on the shirt she is wearing. Make sure you choose colors that compliment one and other and don’t go crazy with the mixing and matching.
•    Suits: Another sure fire Stewart look is a nice dress suit. Stewart will often wear suits that are darker in color but usually wears a lighter colored undershirt to go with it.
•    Shoes: Stewart can sometimes be spotted wearing heels, but more times than not you will catch her wearing flats. The shoes you choose will of course depend on the outfit you are wearing and the color of the shoes should obviously go with the outfit.

•    Hair and Make-up: Stewart’s hair is very simple. When you style your hair to look like hers, simply cut it shoulder length and part it down one side and just sweep the hair to both sides. As for make-up, you should use extra make-up in the area of your cheekbones and the rest should come off very natural and very light. If you use lipstick be sure to use lipstick that is not too bright and that blends in with your natural skin tone.

Now practice your cooking and Martha Stewart’s famous catch phrase, ‘It’s a good thing’ and you will be all ready to go.

Geek

How to Dress Like a Geek

Geek

Geeks are unique individuals. They have a lot to offer. The word geek originally was meant to refer to people who are more interested in academics, science, computers, science fiction and other slightly obscure topics. In fact they tend to be so interested in these things that they devote a massive amount of time to them, even to the exclusion of other areas of life like social skills, attention to detail like how they dress and more. However, these days, more and more, geek chic is being referred to as a style in itself and is a respected look. Since people like Bill Gates have become such a success and the world is so dependent on computers, those who were once shunned as geeks are now sought after as geeks. Geek chic is in!

One thing remains the same though. For some reason a geek’s interests are rarely in the world of fashion. An individual who happens to spend a lot of time and energy on fashion and is very much in style is never referred to as a geek. In fact, the easiest way to spot a geek is often to look for those telltale signs that make it obvious that they are obsessed with something besides how they look. In fact some geeks who have help with their fashion choices and definitely have the finances to dress nicely will give away their geekiness because of details. Mismatched socks, a crooked tie, lopsided glasses, a pocket protector serving an oh-so-important function or a fanny pack neatly concealed beneath a jacket are all giveaways. Yes, sometimes it’s difficult to spot a geek. Other times, it can be very hard to miss them.

For a group of people so often fascinated with the future, they seem to live in the past when it comes to their wardrobes. Geeks just can’t be bothered with fashion. They’re too busy saving the world. Therefore, their look may be just a little frumpled, a bit out of date, a tad mismatched or even ill-fitting. It just goes to show that fashion is not everything and certainly not for everyone. Therefore, if you want to get that geek look, go for it. It may even make you look smarter.

Geeks make it easy for the rest of us to dress like them. Dressing like a geek is easier than flipping up a pair of clip-on sunglasses. All you need is a little bit of creativity and a lack of attention to detail. Make sure you look a little less than perfect and you’ll achieve the perfect geek look.

Geeky t-shirts are very common amongst geeks. For anyone striving to dress like a geek, T-shirts make it easy. You can have your very own geek T-shirt custom-made or choose one in a geeky design that appeals to you. Fashion tends to repeat itself. Who knows, maybe your tees or geek style will make geek chic even more the rage and you’ll be seen by those who know you as a geek icon!

Cow girl

How to Dress Like a Cow Girl

Cow girl

Cowgirls are practical people. Their primary passions in life are cows, horses and life on the farm. They don’t tend to get caught up in celebrity gossip, the latest fashions, and whether or not they should be wearing a black belt with their brown boots. In general, cowgirls care more about function over fashion when it comes to their apparel.

How can you blame them? After all, who would want to be wearing a pair of shorts or even a pair of pinstripe trousers when riding full speed through a patch of mesquite? What if you were thrown off of your horse into a cactus? What if your horse stepped on your foot and you were wearing a pair of peep toe pumps? Most of all, it’s just downright dangerous to ride a horse without heeled boots.

It’s true that being a cowgirl means sacrificing a little bit of personal style for the sake of being safe and comfortable while performing daily tasks. Being a cowgirl isn’t exactly for your average mall walker. However, when cowgirls aren’t on the range bringing in the cattle, you can bet the ranch that they are looking their best. Just where do you think the term “Buckle Bunny” comes from?

Cowgirls make up for lost time when they get an opportunity to get out on the ‘town’ and be seen. They dress up in all of their usual western wear. But they do it with enough rhinestones, glitter, and glam that you’d think they were walking the red carpet at the Grand Ole Opry. Buckle Bunnies, otherwise known as rodeo groupies, set the standard in western glamour. Nothing can outdo these gals with their bedazzled teal jeans, glittery fingernails, and big jewelry.

In a nutshell, cowgirls love to look their best. But because their everyday lives require that they get a little dirty every now and then, it’s important that they’re appropriately dressed. However, it’s easy to dress like a cowgirl and look great if you remember to use your imagination when it comes to your wardrobe. With a little ingenuity and attention to detail, you can have a comfortable, practical, cowgirl worthy wardrobe.

But just how do you get your hands on such a collection of western wear? It’s easy to acquire a unique cowgirl wardrobe if you live in a town that has stores specializing in western wear. There are plenty of these around, especially in areas where the lifestyle is prevalent. You’ll find everything you need from cowboy, or cowgirl, hats to boots to belt buckles and beyond. In addition there are numerous online resources now that make it easier than ever to find an extensive selection of western wear, whether you live near such stores or not.

When you want to dress like a cowgirl, you can be the best dressed one on the range when you invest in key items like a good hat, boots and belt buckle. They should tell a little about your style and reflect who you are. Comfortable jeans and a T-shirt, plaid button-down shirt or a cozy jacket will round out your outfit perfectly.  Get your genuine cowgirl clothes today and be the best looking cowgirl around.

Kathy Griffin

How to Dress Like Kathy Griffin

Kathy Griffin

Kathy Griffin is a self proclaimed D-List celebrity though her fans would suggest otherwise. The comedian is always finding herself on the opposite end of the best dressed list and is constantly criticized for her sense of fashion. Truth be told though, Griffin actually dresses more like the average person than most celebrities these days. For this reason her ensemble is extremely easy to find and if you want to dress like Kathy Griffin it is a task that is more than doable.

When you think about dressing like Kathy Griffin you should think simplistic. Here are some ways to achieve her ultra easy and sometimes whacky look:

•    Hit the department stores: Kathy Griffin stays true to her claim that she is a D-List performer and appears as though she shops where the average Jane shops. Almost all of her fashions are ones that can be found with ease at your local department store. No need to go to a specialty boutique with Griffin’s look.
•    Pants suit: Griffin is often seen in one of her almost famous pants suits. To emulate this go with a pants suit that is lighter in color and that has a double breasted jacket. Be sure that the pants suit is not too tight as this will ruin the illusion. Finish it off with a pair of sensible high heels.
•    Casual look: Griffin knows how to get casual as well. She often wears jeans and a t-shirt with a cozy pair of white sneakers. If you want to get really creative here you can get a vest to wear or even a nice jacket or sweater.
•    Formal wear: When this D-Lister hits the red carpet she does it in style. She likes to wear form fitting dresses that are made of a silky and sheer material. Feel free to go wild with colors here as Griffin likes to wear many shades of reds, blues, and even pinks. Finish off the dress with a pair of open toe high heels that match the color of the dress.
•    Show your stuff: To further emulate Griffin it is important to show off our cleavage. Griffin like to show how well endowed she is and is often wearing low cut shirts, skirts, and dresses that show a good deal of herself.
•    Assessors: Griffin either goes all out in this department or not at all. If she is wearing accessories they are big and gaudy. She will wear big necklaces and bracelets, and even big earrings.
•    Hair and make-up: Griffin usually keeps her hair down and keeps it curly. You can add to the look by coloring your hair the same fire red as hers is. As for make-up, go all out. Griffin wears a lot of make-up but still looks good when it is all said and done.

All that remains is for you to practice your jokes and start hanging out with some D-List talent and your wish to dress and be like Kathy Griffin will come true.

Smelly shoes

How To Clean Smelly Shoes

Smelly shoes

So why do feet smell so bad? It’s an age-old question. The answer is probably obvious. What might not be obvious is how to clean the smelly shoes that are caused by bad-smelling feet.

Feet contain hundreds of thousands of sweat glands. This is normal in all people. Sweat is basically just salt and water, and doesn’t have much of a smell of its own. The smell is actually caused by bacteria. Sweat attracts bacteria and is their source of food. These millions of bacteria eat the sweat and then excrete it out. The bacterial excretion causes the pungent smells we’re so familiar with.

Actually, hands have nearly as many sweat glands as feet but don’t smell as badly. So what gives? The reason is our socks and shoes. The sweat from our feet can’t easily escape into the air like the sweat our hands excretes. Bacteria love the dark, damp confines of sweaty shoes and have a feeding frenzy. When you remove your kickers at the end of the day, the smell that hits you is all of that collected bacterial waste.

An obvious way to keep shoes from smelling is to keep your feet clean in the first place. Be sure to dry your feet completely after bathing and add a moisture-wicking powder between the toes. Wear socks like cotton or bamboo that are great at absorbing sweat and change them a couple of times throughout the day. Make sure your shoes are not overly tight which is another way to stimulate sweat to build up. Finally, go barefoot and let your feet air-out as much as possible. If you can, put your shoes on a rotation. That is, try to switch to another pair so that previous pair can air out before you wear it again.

Ok so what if you’re too late in cleaning your own feet and simply have shoes that you can barely stand to be in the same room with? There are numerous ways to rid those old, or sometimes barely-worn shoes of the odors they accumulate. Some methods are backed by sound science while others are Grandmother’s old ways that she swears does the trick. Whether you’re inclined towards modern science or old wives-tale methods, try one of these ideas on for size.

1)  A combination of anti-bacterial spray and anti-fungal foot powder. There are various sprays and powders on the market that should work well. One to try is Fresh Wave.

2)  Cedarsoles (insoles made from antifungal cedarwood) have an easy long-lasting effect.

3)  Place each shoe into a plastic bag and place into a freezer overnight. The next day remove from the bag and freezer. Place the shoes outside in the sunlight to thaw, and dry.

4)  Place cat litter into a pair of tights. Tie the tights securely and place in each shoe overnight. The shoes will be odorless the following morning. You will need to change the cat litter periodically. It works, cost is minimal and environmentally friendly!

5)  Remove the laces and soles from your shoes and put them all in a single pillow cushion. Put a small towel in there too and then put on a single 40 or 50 degree wash. repeat this procedure again immediately after the first time.

6)  Put rubbing alcohol on a cotton square and wipe out the insides of the shoes that are not washable.

Now go take care of those shoes before they take on a life of their own!

1970s

How to Dress Like You are From the 1970s

1970s

Dressing like you’re from the 70s is just fun. Everyone likes dressing in 1970s fashion. No matter how many years pass, the trends of the 70s never seem to get old. After all, people living in the 70s just wanted to have a great time and they had a great time from head to toe.

The 1970s spawned some of the most famous fashion trends to date. Images of celebrities in traditional 1970s attire are the ultimate inspiration for nostalgia and days gone by. After all, the Vietnam War was finally behind us and people were ready to have a good time in the 1970s. The economy was on the rise and it was time to party.

And party is exactly what they did. The 1970s were a time for disco dancing and all-night partying. When that kind of fun is going on, you need to be appropriately dressed for the festivities. The 1970s had no choice but to create some unique fashion trends to match the eccentricity of the age.
If you want to dress like you’re from the 70s there are definitely a few things you will have to invest in.

•    Skirts of all lengths are indicative of this era. Mini-skirts, midi-skirts and maxi-skirts like peasant skirts were all acceptable wear.

•    Platform shoes are a classic 70s look for both genders.

•    Bellbottom pants are the perfect choice for guys or girls.

•    Short shorts and crop tops are great choices for anyone who is comfortable bearing almost all.

•    Trouser suits and leisure suits, as well as flowing kaftans also make an instantaneous 70s outfit.

The details of your look are also important for anyone striving for a genuine 70s look. Shimmery eye shadows, frosted hair and golden tans of 70s beach babes are easy to emulate. The winged layers of Farrah Fawcett’s famous locks are another ideal look to complement your 70s look. Afro haircuts are also a hot style. To say that the fashions of the 1970s were colorful and unique would be the understatement of the century.

Having disco outfits for nights out is indicative of the 70s too. John Travolta’s white polyester suit will go down in infamy, as will his legendary dance moves from Saturday Night Fever. Hot pants are another ideal disco outfit. Satin jackets and men wearing medallions are also genuine 70s looks.

One of the most common fashion trends of the 1970s was the t-shirt. The standard men’s outfit consisted of a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. People took pride in creating their own t-shirts and used their personal style and creativity to make plain old t-shirts into something special. Even today, you can buy reproduction 70s style t-shirts in department stores and trendy boutiques. The t-shirts of the 70s are as iconic as Jacqui Kennedy’s Halston sunglasses. Tie-dye T-shirts are the absolute best way to quickly and easily recreate a 70s look on a budget.

If you want to dress like you’re from the 70s, you can easily get the look and the experience of this legendary fashion decade. Remember to go crazy with color and keep your outfits hippie-like.

Washington DC

What To Wear In Washington D.C.

Washington DC

Washington DC is the capital of the United States and the hub of the American government. Centrally located on the Eastern seaboard in the mid-Atlantic region, Washington enjoys four seasons, with a pleasantly short winter. If you are planning to visit the nation’s capital you will need to pack a variety of clothes depending on what you are planning to do there and the season in which you visit.

Washington in the spring and fall is very comfortable. On many days you can get away without a jacket, though one will usually be needed at night. Pants and a long-sleeved top are often sufficient to keep you comfortable both inside and out. If you visit during these seasons you will enjoy the fact that you don’t need to tote extra clothing around each day.

Visiting Washington in the summer means you will get to enjoy very warm temperatures. However the city does tend to be humid also. While you will want to dress for the weather, avoid the temptation to dress too scantily. It is a very conservative city and you will find that people dress modestly, even in tourist areas. Remember to bring along a sweater or shirt to keep you warm if you are indoors because of the air conditioning. You will also do a fair amount of walking as you visit the museums, monuments, the National Zoo and so many of the other sites in Washington, therefore comfortable shoes or sneakers are an absolute must.

If you are traveling to the nation’s capital on business be prepared to dress in professional business attire. Washington is a very formal, conservative business and government environment, so you will need to dress accordingly. For men this simply means a dark suit and tie. For women a dress suit is in order, with hose and pumps.

If going to special events, out for dinner, to shows or parties, be prepared to dress for the occasion. Washington is a busy city with a wide variety of cultural events. Many of those who attend cultural events are dressed formally. In order to fit in comfortably you should do likewise. You will need to dress in at least business casual clothes for most restaurants. However many will require a jacket and tie for men.

Going to the bars to socialize after work is very common, so you will want to be well-dressed as most people are still in work clothes, especially for bars close to downtown Washington. If you plan to go clubbing later in the evening, chic outfits are recommended also.

During football season, plan to wear team clothes for professional and college teams on game days. There are also professional baseball, hockey, soccer and basketball teams. Casual wear is the choice for taking in such games and team colors can be seen throughout the city, especially when the team is playing at home.

Pull out a variety of your best clothes and put together some dressy outfits if you are heading to Washington. Only the best will do for our nation’s capital.

The Samurai is one of the most respected yet feared figures in all of history. These highly trained Japanese warriors would kill you on the spot if you even looked at them. They dedicated their lives to their practice and to their fellow warriors. The entire existence of the samurai is based on loyalty, commitment, and honor.

Because of their legacy of devotion and commitment, the samurai has become a revered image of inspiration. However, many people forget how ruthless they really were. It’s safe to say that you would not have wanted to encounter a samurai on the street. What if you actually made eye contact? In the blink of an eye you’d be yet another victim of ocular malfunction.

Despite their ruthlessness, many people would love the opportunity to be a samurai. Some people even devote their whole lives to the study of the history, life, and practice of the samurai. They live their lives based on the philosophy of the samurai and even take up martial arts. There might not be anymore official samurai left, but there are many honorary samurai around the world.

Dressing like a samurai is a big part of living like one. Samurai were warriors. They couldn’t go into battle in a t-shirt and jeans. They wore a fierce looking suit of armor and carried their swords into battle. When they weren’t showing off their fighting skills on the battle field, traditional Japanese costume took center stage.

If you want to dress like a samurai, there is lots of information about what they wore and how they dressed. There have been thousands of books written over the years about the way of the samurai. You could spend your whole life learning how to dress like one. However, dressing like a samurai in the modern day world could cause people to stare. And you can’t exactly kill people just for looking at you anymore. That would certainly bring your samurai days to an end.

For a fun modern Samurai look, think about some of the things that are worn for karate, only much more luxurious. A short, belted, silk kimono made of a rich Oriental design would make a great top for a Samurai to wear. Choose a rich, impressive color. Silk pants in a matching shade complete the look just perfectly. Use cords at the hem of the pants to keep them close to the leg.

If you are dressing as a samurai for a party or special event, you will want to add a few things to look as authentic as possible. Metal armor was commonly worn on the lower legs, shoulders, arms and torso. A metal skirt was also worn to protect the groin area and upper legs. A skull cap goes on the head before the helmet and a scarf is worn across the face. No genuine samurai should be without such gear.

If you want to dress like a samurai, be sure that you are prepared for the reaction you’ll get. You will definitely turn some heads.

Teacher

How to Dress Like a Teacher

Teacher

Dressing like a teacher seems pretty easy to most people. You go to your closet, you put on the first thing you see and out the door. However, it really is more complex than that. Teachers, like their students, often have dress codes to respect, some actually written, while others are simply common-sense guidelines.

The fact is that teachers get a bad deal when it comes to fashion. Let’s face it: these ladies (and gentlemen) have a tough job. You can’t blame them for wanting to be comfortable. They also have to be tasteful yet professionally dressed. The classroom is not always the place to make a fashion statement. For this reason, some teachers grapple with the right thing to wear and sometimes result to some dorky outfits.

Here are some guidelines about dressing if you are a teacher.

•    Don’t wear anything that is too tight, low-cut, revealing or overtly sexy. If you’d feel comfortable in a nightclub in your outfit, it’s not for the classroom.

•    Cover up. Make sure you don’t wear short shorts, in fact, no shorts are better. Even if you live in a hot climate, shorts are not considered business casual, so don’t wear them for school either.

•    If you wear a sleeveless shirt, make sure the shoulder portion covers at least most of the top of your shoulder or have another top to go over it that you plan to keep on all day.

•    Choose clothing that is practical in terms of laundering. Chances are, in a classroom, especially if you have younger students, you will get dirty. Leave your dry-clean only items for socializing and make sure your teaching clothes are wash and wear.

•    Layering is always a good idea. It may be cold at the beginning of the day and warm up significantly when you have a classroom full of students. You may also have surveillance duty outside and need something heavier than what you wear in class. Have an extra layer that you can add or take off.

•    Keep practicality in mind. Wear closed toe shoes with a comfortable heel that you can stand in for a long period of time.

•    Watch the length of your skirt and how you sit when you are wearing a skirt. Often teachers climb up on furniture for things or sit on the floor. Doing so may expose more than you want unless you have the right type of skirt.

•    Apart from that you can pretty much wear anything you want as a teacher, especially on special days. If you have a sports event you can wear sports clothes. If you have some special thing happening at school, you may even have a customized T-shirt to wear. The rest of the time you can wear casual or even business type outfits to class, depending on your own style.

Dressing like a teacher doesn’t mean that you are limited in what you wear. You just have a different set of factors to take into consideration compared to professionals in other jobs. Teachers are hard-working and underpaid, so style is not always at the top of their list of things to be concerned with. Luckily, that’s not what counts the most.

New shoes

How to Break in a New Pair of Shoes

New shoes

More times than not a person buys a pair of shoes based more on looks and neglects to think about the comfort. Even a pair of shoes that may have felt alright while on your feet at the shoe store can be brought home only to discover that they aren’t all that cozy and are certainly going to take some breaking in. Breaking a pair of shoes in means that you have to basically stretch the shoes to get them to fit and conform to your feet.

If you are like most people you will simply bite the bullet, buy a fresh package of Band Aids and just start wearing the shoes around. White this is certainly one way to go about it, there are things you can do to lessen the blisters and still have your new shoes fitting like an old standby pair of gym shoes.

Here are some tips to help you break in your shoes without breaking in your skin:

•    Take in a flick: First put on your new pair of shoes and then pop in your favorite DVD. Then sit back and relax. While you are enjoying the film, your feet will be effortlessly stretching the new pair of shoes and this will lead to a better fit.
•    Wear extra socks: Put on two or three pairs of socks for shoes that require just one pair and one or two pairs for shoes that require none and then squeeze into your new pair of shoes. Walk around the house in your shoes for about 15 to 20 minutes. The extra socks will increase the size of your foot and help to stretch the shoes faster and because the extras socks will build up a layer of extra padding, blisters will more than likely stay away.
•    Enlist a friend: Find one of your friends that has feet that are a size or so bigger than yours. Ask them to put on the shoes and walk around for about five minutes. The increased foot size will have your shoes broken in before you know it.
•    Flex your shoes: This tip works especially well for new sneakers. Take one shoe at a time and simple flex and stretch it with your hands. Repeat the process with the other shoe and do this for about 20 minutes. The more you flex and stretch the shoes, the easier it will be to get your feet to comfortably fit into them.
•    Stuff your shoes: Before you go to bed you can stuff your shoes full of socks. The goal here is to have the shoes so stuffed that the sides are bulging out. This will give the shoes a nice stretch all night long and they should fit you much better come morning time.

Just remember that breaking in a new pair of shoes will take a little time. Be patient and avoid buying a pair of shoes that you have to wear right away. With a little manipulation of your new pair of shoes, they will be as cozy as an old pair of slippers in no time.

Tomboy

How to Avoid Looking like a Tomboy

Tomboy

A tomboy is defined as a girl that dresses and acts like a boy. This is all fine and dandy in your younger years, but when you start to get older you may not want people thinking that you dress like a tomboy.

While having a tomboy for a companion is probably very enjoyable for most men as they can just hang out and be buddy, buddy, there is always the side of a man that wants to see the softer side of a woman. If you are dressed like a tomboy this can be a difficult thing to see. So how do you avoid looking like a tomboy?

Here are some tips on how you can avoid the tomboy label:

•    Spruce up your hair: The typical tomboy will simply throw on a hat or just let her hair kind of lay flat. Even if you have short hair you can use some gel and spruce it up. With today’s hair fashion, it is easy to find a simple way to make your hair fun, exiting, and feminine. Hats are fine, but save them for sporting events.

•    Ditch the jeans: While jeans are fine for certain occasions, in order to avoid the whole tomboy name calling you will have to wear other garments from time to time. Try wearing a nice formal sun dress the next time you go out. They offer much comfort and there is no way that a dress can come off as tomboyish.

•    Makeup: You may not be used to wearing makeup and that’s ok, but a little bit will go a long way in deterring the tag you don’t want. Some simple blush, eyeliner, and lipstick is usually enough to do the trick. If you want to get more in depth, go to a department store and let them show you how to apply makeup, they are always good for some free tips.

•    Scent of a woman: Try wearing perfume that is less masculine smelling and more feminine smelling. Wear perfumes that have a more floral scent as this is closely related to women.

•    Shoes: nothing screams tomboy like a pair of sneakers. This isn’t to say that you have to start wearing heels with everything, but there a number of ultra comfortable and very feminine looking shoes available these days so you can retire your Nikes.

•    Wear girl t-shirts: The only time you should be wearing a guy’s t-shirt is when you snag one of your boyfriend’s for a cozy pj shirt. If you wear t-shirts made for guys, you will look like a guy. Shop in the women’s section and get t-shirts designed for women, there is a difference.

•    Get your nails done: Another easy trick to squashing the tomboy image is to get a manicure done. You don’t have to have long nails already as you can simply go to a nail salon and they can attach false nails on top of your own. It’s hard to look like a boy if you have long luxurious nails that are painted a nice bright color.

Above all else, don’t lose your fun side. Guys like a girl that can hang with them and talk sports, but just because you like to act like one of the guys, doesn’t mean you have to look like one of them.

Muscle tone

Fashion Tips for Highlighting Your Muscle Tone

Muscle tone

It takes a much disciplined person to keep a strict workout regimen. If you are one of those individuals you should feel proud of yourself and it is only natural that you will want to wear clothing that highlights your muscle tone. Some may call this bragging, but hey, you’ve earned the right to show off what you’ve got and really it’s no different from what many individuals do; show off their greatest assets.

Dressing to highlight your muscle tone is a delicate balance and if not done properly you could come off looking too boastful. Here are some tips to ensure you look great while highlighting your muscle tone:

•    Keep them wondering: The trick with highlighting muscle tone is to bare just the right amount of flesh in all the right places. If you bare too much you will cheapen the look and have people thinking you are trying too hard. This can be accomplished by wearing a short sleeved shirt that fits nicely rather than a sleeveless shirt that screams, ‘look at me everyone!’ You can also show just enough skin to tease people as to what lies beneath. The trick here is to expose some, but not all of the muscle you wish to highlight, for example, wearing a short sleeved shirt that covers half the bicep.

•    Not too tight: You will of course want to wear clothing that is form fitting as this will help you to show off your muscle tone, but be careful that you don’t go too tight. With shirts you don’t want them to be so tight that it looks like it is cutting off the circulation in the arms. Choose a snug fit instead. The same applies for pants and jeans. You will want to go with a slimmer cut that hugs your body better but don’t go too tight like a pair of skinny jeans. If your pants are too tight, you may actually be hiding your muscle tone instead of highlighting it.

•    Nice legs: Both men and women can show off their muscle tone legs easily when in a formal environment. For women, simply wear a nice dress that is not too long and your legs will speak for themselves. Guys can wear a nice pair of cargo shorts that come down just above the knee. Don’t go too short here though as no one want to see a guy in short-shorts.

•    Follow fashion: Wear what’s in style. There are plenty of cloths that can be worn that will highlight your muscle tone that are in current style so instead of wearing clothing that sports the name of the gym you work out at, dress like everyone else. If you dress like you are going to the gym for all occasions you will again cheapen your look and have people thinking you are trying to show off.

It’s totally natural for you in shape individuals to want to show what you have, just be sure to do it the right way. If done properly, you can highlight your muscle tone nicely without looking like you are seeking the attention of everyone in the world.

Upcycling clothes

Guide to Upcycling Clothing – Making something New from Something Old

Upcycling clothes

Every year our planet produces countless tons of garbage. Somewhere in those tons a good portion of it is old clothing. While many are very good about taking their unwanted clothing to their local Good Will, others simply discard them with the rest of the household trash. Enter the latest craze known as upcycling.

The term ‘upcycling’ was coined by the authors of the book Cradle to Cradle; Remaking the Way We Make Things, William McDonough and Michael Braungart and essentially means taking something that was meant for the landfill and turning it into something totally new and usable. This will of course reduce waste and be better for the world in which we live.

The great thing with upcycling clothing is that you are giving your old garments a whole new purpose in life. After they have covered you body for many months or years, it doesn’t mean their usefulness is done. Of course it is always nice to donate some clothing, but many times clothing can get torn, stained, or is just un-wearable and these garments are the perfect candidates for upcycling.

Here are some easy and great ways you can get new use out of your old cloths:

•    Wrapping presents: The oriental community has practiced this for some time now. Instead of using costly wrapping paper, which accounts for many trees being cut down, try using some old clothing. Old silk shirts or any other kind of softer material can be cut up to make a unique and eco-friendly wrap that will have your friends and family dazzle in delight.
•    Quilts: Old jeans are best for this but really any material can be used. If you are handy with the needle, you can make some really unique pieces. If you are not handy with the needle, it is not all that hard to learn how to be. Who knows, you may get a fun new hobby out of the deal.
•    Rags for your car: Nothing makes for a nicer rag when detailing your car like an old cotton shirt. The nice thing about using an old shirt for rags is that you can cut the shirt up into various sizes and accomplish different task with them. These rags can also be washed and used again and again. When they are too harsh to use for detailing your car, upcycle them again and use them when performing tasks like checking the oil level in your car or cleaning up big messes like spilled oil or other types of fluids.
•    Give new life to old cloths: If you have kids, this one is especially fun. You can take old tattered clothing and have a day where you cut and sew and paste and before you know it, you will have a whole bunch of new and unique cloths for your kids to wear that they designed. Who knows, your kids might even start a new trend at school.

The limits to upcycling clothing are endless and really only stop with your imagination. Upcycling is not only good for the environment, but it can be fun as well. Everything deserves a second chance; even old cloths.

Younger

Dressing to Look 10 Years Younger

Younger

Nobody wants to get older, but until the fountain of youth is found it is just a sad fact of life that everyone has to deal with. Fortunately for you there is always something you can do to help you look 10 years younger; change the way you dress. Dressing to look 10 years younger is not as hard as might think and there is inspiration everywhere you just have to know where to look.

When dressing to look 10 years younger, you can always look to these individuals for inspiration:

•    News Casters: That’s right; the media darlings that are always in the spotlight are a great source of what’s hot and what’s not in fashion. Beyond that, they tend to dress younger looking as there is always competition from younger members of the media that are fighting to take the camera eye away. Viewing you local news will give you some great ideas.
•    Display Mannequins: These dummies are no dummies. They are dressed with the latest in fashion and are a great place to look when you are trying to accomplish the 10 years younger look. Just be sure that you are looking at the top end department store mannequins as these places usually are a bit more up to date on fashion versus the bargain department stores.
•    Top End Department Store Associates: This is probably the easiest way to actually find someone who is 10 years younger that you and simply emulate their style. These individuals make a great model for you to follow as their job requires them to dress in the latest fashions. If you feel brave you can actually go and talk to the sales associate and ask them questions about how they dress. They will more than likely be flattered and more than willing to help you out.

Equally as important as knowing where to look is knowing were not to look for advice. The following sources will provide you with plenty of advice; it will just be the wrong kind:

•    Teenagers: The biggest mistake most people make when trying to dress 10 years younger is looking to their teenage kids for advice. Your goal is 10 years, not several generations. If you go around looking like your teenager, you will accomplish nothing more than looking like you are trying too hard and are clinging to your youth.
•    Friends your own age: If you want to seek the advice of your friends, make sure that you are asking friends that are younger than you. If you ask someone the same age as you how to look ten years younger, unless they are in the fashion biz, you may be asking for disaster.
•    Wrong department: A huge mistake that many women make is going to the wrong department and looking for clothes. Instead of looking to the Misses section, women should focus on the Junior section because these fashions are going to emulate the latest fashions that the younger generations wear as opposed to the Misses section were fashions may be in style, but tend to have an ‘older’ look.

Don’t stop with the cloths though. You can also achieve that 10 years younger look by accessorizing. Follow the same dos and don’ts for accessories and your youthful look should be easily achieved.

Fitting room etiquette

A Guide to Fitting Room Etiquette

Fitting room etiquette

Most department stores that you visit have a place known as the dressing room or fitting room where you can go to try on clothing you are thinking about buying. Some fitting rooms hare fully closed in with a door while others have a curtain that can be drawn closed and still others resemble the old style western saloon doors. Whichever type of fitting room you find yourself in there are some rules of etiquette that should be followed.

While some of these rules are posted and some are unspoken, they should all be followed in order to ensure that everyone has a pleasant experience in their shopping trip.

1.    Keep it down: You need to remember that the walls of a dressing room are strictly there for privacy purposes and that it is very easy for the person in the fitting room next to you to hear a conversation you may be having with a loved one or a friend. No one wants to hear how you or someone else thinks your butt looks in a certain type of jeans, so keep your voices down. This goes for those of you that like to speak really loudly on your cell phones too. Just because you can’t see the person in the next fitting room doesn’t mean that they can’t hear you. Though it may sometimes feel like it, a fitting room is not a phone booth.

2.    Occupied: If a door is closed or a curtain is drawn, always assume someone is in the fitting room. Never barge in as you and the occupant can be in for an unwelcomed surprise. If there are no other open fitting rooms, make sure to knock first and actually wait to hear for an answer back.

3.    Tidy up: You should always leave the fitting room in the same condition, if not better, than you did when you entered it. This means actually taking a little time and turning the cloths right side in and re-hanging them on their appropriate hangers if you do not intend on buying them. Then the clothing should be returned to the fitting room attendant. True, it is their job to look through the fitting rooms every so often to retrieve articles of clothing that are left behind, but don’t have that attitude. You wouldn’t like it if someone did it to you would you? A little courtesy can go a long way.

4.    Please keep your underwear on: Even if you are trying on something you would not normally wear underwear with, like a bikini, panties, or a swimsuit, leave your underwear on. First of all it is the right thing to do, but second off you could be the second or even third person to try on that garment. What if the person before you broke this rule?

5.    Be nice: This rule is often the most ignored. Be nice to the people who work at the store and are helping you with your fitting room experience. They are people too and there is nothing to gain by being rude to them.

When it comes to fitting room etiquette, little things can go a long way. They may be written or unspoken rules, but they are all important and will ensure that your next visit to a fitting room is a welcomed one.
